  • Drove a manual today.

For the first time in over two years & to be honest i really don't miss it.

Was nice for a change & i did'nt stall it but i don't think i would go back to manual ever again.

To think two years ago i really was'nt sure about an auto & nearly did'nt buy the surf because of it.

Just thought i'd share that with you all.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Same here, all of our vehicles are imports and all are automatics. Well the Celica is semi-auto, and all of them are petrol powered too!
I can't be arsed with gearstick twiddling either.

Some of us still like fiddling with our gearstick.

Its not so much the stick, rather the clutch, its such a strain on my skinny legs.

Don't get me wrong, I really love my girl, but on many occasions I wish she was a manual. My daily drive is an manual mk6 escort, and that just loves to be thrown through the gear box.

Must admit, I personally like both. Manual will always be favourite though just for the simple fact that it separates us from those wussie Yanks.

My Surfs an auto, so when I drive the wife's car I forget the gears sometimes when I get to roundabouts. She is always reminding me. Once after driving an auto in the States all holiday I got back to the UK and as I went to pay at the Humber Bridge toll I braked and didn't depress the clutch. Juddered past the booth and had to reverse to a bemused toll collector . I also when I get back from driving abroad have a tendency to want to drive on the wrong side of the road back here. That upsets her even more.

Hi Sider - I echo your comments exactly. Had an 4L petrol (lpg) auto Cherokee for 6 years, great drive but negotiating the wifes manual on occasions ie islands and clutches did cause concern. Having said that manual 4 Runner still rates as one of the cheapest and best vehicles I have owned. It is very stable as a 4x4 compared to the Jeep and even especially compared to an Explorer I owned for about 6 weeks and very soon hated.

Advantage of the Auto - being able to eat my marmite on toast and drink tea on the way to work!!

Also find I get flashbacks and have to really think which side of the road I should be on...fortunately not proved disasterous.
