as wrong as it is to plagerise someones work, i would feel flattered.
hopefully he will learn from his mistakes, and think about things next time

It's not particularly flattering when some idle shite rips off your work, and he's not the sort of person who will even think he made a mistake. Yes he's been very sheepish and subdued. He's sorry because he was caught, not because it is wrong.

The sooner he gets kicked out of college the better. I do a fair bit of tutoring in mechanical engineering at uni, and trust me, there's no shortage of decent, good people learning the stuff, but sadly no shortage of tw@ts too. Never come across this level of cheating though - he certainly doesn't deserve to get a single qualification. I'm surprised your company hasn't given him a disciplinary hearing and 1 hour to clear out, with a full letter to the college.

Sod the kid's future, let him work in Makie Dee's. There's many better people willing to step up to the mark.

And i'm sure that you are a proud example of one of those better people.

its very easy to slap wrists. its also very easy to make mistakes.
i dont believe kicking someone out of college or university is the correct answer here.
                  just my opinion.

Wrong is wrong. Why should the shitholes always get the second chance? He should have been drummed out quicker than you could blink, in my opinion. There are enough floaters around without actively encouraging one.

A mistake is exactly that. A mistake. The example here is, by no stretch of the imagination, a mistake.

Agreed, and learning is all about mistakes. We've all made stupid mistakes. But whole scale copying of someone else's work and passing it off as your own is slightly more than a cockup, right?

There's firms up and down the country laying off good people just now. One less idiot like this getting qualified won't do any harm.

I kind of know what you're driving at. I think 'error of judgement' is closer to what you mean than mistake. We all learn from our mistakes but, unfortunately, the mechanism for doing that is by accepting the consequences. In order to learn from this one, the fella needs to find out that if you steal from people at work and lie on your coursework, you get fired and get booted off your course.

There's no point telling him that's what you could have done - you have to actually do it.

I'm glad that both sides of the coin have been presented here in a civilised forum of ideas.
My reasoning is if I think of myself in that current position, although I wouldn't have done that in the first place.. May be if he does get off lightly now that it would leave this kind of thinking easily within reach in the future.
How good is he at making tea? Is it worth keeping him on solely for that reason? Just another thought I had..

The thing is, he's a thief. What's the difference between Andy's magic box thing and his wallet? (apart from the wallet being bigger and heavier of course)

I'd sack him on the spot, I hate thieving scum like him.

Generally, and simply for the fact that they're allowed to get away with it. This thread is a perfect example of that.
