Hi all - just thought I'd share my afternoons work - maybe of interest to those who've had fuel starvation concerns.
I posted up a few months ago about a concern with starvation when my tank was below half way. -long story short - it was crud in my fuel tank blocking strainer on pick up pipe when level was low.
I had cleaned tank thoroughly with bottle brush and petrol until it was pristine.
2 months later - problem with starvation is back. done some research on veg oil forum. I use my own processed WVO (dried and filter to 1 ym) and is crystal clear even when freezing outside. Apparently the white flaky bits in my tank were STEROL GLUCOCIDES which start off as microscopic crystals which can seed and grow into quite large flakes when in the presence of deisel. I don't quite fully understand the chemistry involve in this but got the gist.
So it would seem i need to clean my tank on a regular basis - or remove strainer from pick up pipe inside tank and fit a course filter inline somewhere more accessible - engine bay etc.
Just to make sure that in future the problem is a blocked strainer - I needed easy access to it - without having to remove fuel tank again and again. There is no inspection cover or access hole in floor of truck - until now!!
removed back seats and carpet and guessed/cut access hatch in floor to get at pick up pipes. Not much clearance for a jigsaw blade ( perhaps a shortened blade may do) But I used my nibbler to hack away without fear of shreading fuel lines!!
Pictures show process and what pick up pipes look like for future reference.
one interesting point i discovered - fuel return line(silver pipe) ends right beside strainer - as if to constantly rinse screen - but not in my case..
made new removable cover from some glav 1/16" plate and sealed with a piece of sound deadening bitumin/foil sheet.
Now just waiting for tank to get empty to have a look!!
