  • Anybody in the TA?

    Hi All,

I have recently made moves to get back into uniform and "hopefully" off to Afghanistan next year with 16 Air Assault Brigade.

The Reserve Forces have now raised their upper age limit to 43 (more if you have previous military experience!).

    Last time it was 33!

Was just wondering is anyone here with the TA or maybe thinking about it?

    Gary

    I was while at Uni .. 2 nights a week, 1 weekend in 2/3 ..

Helped pay for my beers, and made sure I had a good meal now and then.

I already have a job that doesn't involve killing people or being killed. Somehow it just seems like a better option to me.

What are you afraid of? Bit of death never hurt anyone!

          Seriously though... couldn't agree more.

Could be worse. you could fight for an adopted queen and country, guard the royals whilst on active duties and generally scare the bejesus out of the enemy, whilst laying your life on the line...and then be denied any form of financial aid in your formative years. Now excuse me while i DONT join the gurkhas.....as im so ashamed of the way they are treated, im not sure i could look them in the eye.
            Non intercooled nothing.

Quite. My favourite bit was when they tried to deport them all now they're old and and no good at fighting.

Someone has to do the job, each to their own.

I loved it .. getting payed to play soldiers ..

Didn't do any "tours" though, as I was at Uni. Thank goodness.

Just got to run around Wales and shoot guns.

Not sure I agree on the first point. Absolutely agree on the second, so I'll leave it at that.

Even a stumpy like me has to stoop to look the average Ghurka in the eye ......

I'm a bit ambivalent about the Ghurkas - it might be unfair but they were aware of the conditions of service before they signed up. Campaigning to change their conditions of service is perfectly acceptable but applying changes retrospectively is basically wrong.

22 years Regular Army without a single operational tour - only one medal and I wouldn't have got that if it wasn't for the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act !

Feel free to throw things in my general direction

Life is too important to take seriously !
