Just what is that supposed to mean?

As per usual on this forum the thread has been hijacked by moral crusaders and flame baiters!

          It was a simple enough f r i g g i n question!

Genuinely posted in the "General" section, nothing to do with "killing" or "being killed"!

          I give up!

I just couldn't be arsed anymore with it, from now on I'll just "lurk" and let the forum assassins get on with it!

Thanks for the genuine posts guys but it's a total waste of time.

Don't take it to heart. Just remember the fact that people still have the right of free will due to the Armed Forces. Morality is a freedom they have been afforded by those they crusade against.

              Well said!

I don't believe we should be in Afghanistan really either but I would go tomorrow If it helped get our boys & girls get back home any quicker!

99% of troops out there aren't there for politics!

They are there for their mates and because of some deep rooted sense of patriotism.

PS: Wiggy I sent you a PM mate!

Just read posts 12 and 13, pick all your toys up and put them back in the pram.

I don't think what I meant requires explanation. I have no beef at all with people in the armed forces, but I have no interest in killing people or being killed myself (or being any part of it), hence it's not a career I would choose.

I don't have a pram and no toys anymore only the Surf, sorry!

This is my point, I didn't ask anyone about "killing people or being killed", I asked a very simple, clear question to see if anyone had been in the TA or was thinking about it!

                  That's all!

                  No more and no less!

I didn't really intend for ANY arguing or counter posts to develop, it was just a plain old simple boring general question!

Possibly was only really destined for those who had an answer to my original question!

Now! we got 3/4 discussions going, The Ghurkas, Drumclog, "Killing and being killed" and something or t'other about Whisky!

Last but not least, we got you, who is starting to moralise and has just insulted me!

                  For what?

For wanting to discuss a genuine topic that I am interested in?

I have noticed a real difference on here of late, seems to be a lot of bitchyness going on!

Agreed ! Go for it I sadly am too old , but support the recruitment and selection programme in South Yorkshire on an associate basis.

Well, you did. That's the point of the Army.

I didn't really intend for ANY arguing or counter posts to develop, it was just a plain old simple boring general question!

You could stop arguing then. Again, I would refer you to post 12 where I said I wouldn't bother arguing about it because it's an entirely personal choice.

Now! we got 3/4 discussions going, The Ghurkas, Drumclog, "Killing and being killed" and something or t'other about Whisky!

Staying on-topic is not one of the strong points of this forum. I suppose we could all have replied either yes or no but it would have been a bit dull

Last but not least, we got you, who is starting to moralise and has just insulted me!

I've insulted no-one and, if by moralise you mean trying to force my views on other people, I've not done that either. I've just said I don't want to join the armed forces.

I have noticed a real difference on here of late, seems to be a lot of bitchyness going on!

Someone says that about every three months
Seriously, join the TA and enjoy yourself. If that's what you want to do, go for it. It's not something I'd ever do myself and, if that puts your nose out of joint, so be it.

I have recently made moves to get back into uniform and "hopefully" off to Afghanistan next year with 16 Air Assault Brigade.

The Reserve Forces have now raised their upper age limit to 43 (more if you have previous military experience!).

                            Last time it was 33!

Was just wondering is anyone here with the TA or maybe thinking about it?

First sorry for a light hearted well intended hijack of your post.
Second the statement highlighted above is somewhat nullified by the use of ""hopefully" off to Afghanistan next year with 16 Air Assault Brigade.
And then a smile of a gun firing off rounds.

Like 99% of people who read that post I certainly took it to mean you were hoping to at the very least get to shoot at people.

So as for your stated intention " asked a very simple, clear question to see if anyone had been in the TA or was thinking about it!"
It did not come over as such.

Like Sancho not something I would relish or choose to do.
I think you owe him an apologie, as I didn't see anything in the way of a flame or abuse in his response to you, and hopefully now you can see how your original post was taken, as you looking forward to getting back in the thick of a battle.

As for the whisky I still say it beats bullet every time.
'O' and by the way I support the job the lads and lassies do on our behalf, I just get angry at the way our leaders make them do it.

                              Just a minor digression .....

The point of the British Armed Forces is NOT to kill or be killed - they are a defensive force, the moment they start shooting then it means that the politicians have FAILED to do their part !

Iraq is the result of our incompetent leadership supporting Bush and the rest of his cronies.

Afghanistan is supposed to be part of the 'war on terror' but is in reality about stopping the heroin trade that the fundamentalists are using to raise funds and destabilise the western world.

Personally I think we ought to pull all our guys out and reinforce our borders to keep all the dodgy immigrants out (That's not necessarily ALL immigrants) - obviously that'll mean a massive increase in manpower for HMRC and the Immigration Service but wtf - you won't mind paying a bit more tax will you !

                              PS
Despite 22 years in the Regular Army, the Armed Forces are now on the list of careers I would not personally contemplate or advise anybody else to consider. I find it rather sad that the state of our country is such that the list also includes:

                              Police Force
                              Fire Brigade
                              NHS (In any capacity)
                              Teaching

Best of luck to anybody with the guts to tackle any of them

LOL, wind your neck in and wise up!

It blokes like you and Sancho that can be seen on most threads, ripping them up and deliberately turning light hearted banter into bad feelings and basically crap!

Simple matter is, you probably sit by your PC rubbing your hands in anticipation of threads like this so you can spout your nonsense.

Let me guess, you and Sancho are bestest buddies, right?

Fireside politicians, always an opinion but never the balls to act or do anything about it.

Good at telling others what's wrong with the world over a pint and a pie.

Putting people down for doing anything that you don't approve of!
