The assumption being that folk with cars over 10 years old (us) can't afford new ones?

I could easily afford a new car, I merely choose not to buy one, I'm sure many others are in the same position? And a £2k incentive won't change that.

The only thing I can see happening is the 2nd hand car market stalling at £2k? After all, that's what they're now worth?

Not picking up on you specifically Steve, more the general gist/content of your post. What most people seem to be missing, when they are calling for lynching the bankers and such, (granted, those in charge should never have let things run loose like they have), is that they seem to fail to take into consideration the fact that banks can only lend money if people are willing to borrow it.

I see no-one turning round to their friends and neighbours, (who probably ran several times more debt onto their credit facilities than they could possibly manage to ever repay, just because they could), and rebuking them. The finger of blame lays with BOTH the financial institutions and also with the people who have been living well beyond their means. I haven't seen any reprisals regarding the common folks part in all of this fiasco yet. That part always seems to be conveniently overlooked.

It always appears to be far easier for people to blame someone else.

I dont do credit and havent had any debt since 1984-5, after striking for a year having lecky/gas disconnected and bailiffs constantly at the door over trivial sums, (they got f-all either) I decided cash was the only option, I wouldn't have a new car even if I won one, I'd sell it. The only dosh I owe is the poll tax and sometimes the tv licence, I begrudge paying 1200 quid a year for having my bin emptied and the beeb is a waste of space, thats another organization which really knows how to squander cash, J. Ross for example. H

Notice how the government are a bit quiet on the borrowing money subject (the 175 billion borrowing that is), still im sure my 9 year old will be paying for this generations hooleys when he starts work

I'm not disagreeing with that either. Absolutely true regarding priorities being completely out of whack. However, picking on the starving people point. If, for example, the Govt. said they were going to add an extra tax rate to raise money to aid foreign countries, how would people react? Priorities are fine with most people when they can be spoken of. Giving them anything more than lip service is completely different, however.

The people in this country are the ones to blame, to a large degree, for things being the way they are. Companies will always take advantage of peoples needs and wants. They can only do so, however, when people are prioritising their own needs above those of any others. In truth, in this country, most people have become more American in their values than they care to admit. Sod everyone else as long as I'm okay seems to be the general spirit.

Take foreign workers and imports, for example. If the people in this country didn't spend half as much time bitching about how much is the minimum they are willing to work for, cheap foreign imports and immigrant workers would practically be a non-existent consideration. Also, the fact that people expect more money for doing their job never makes them any better off. Prices merely rise to take any excess they may have earned away from them, hence the cycle starts again. Look at house prices, for example. When was the last time they were actually at a realistic value rather than severely over-inflated?

I've honestly no sympathy for the doomsayers who slag off the country and say things are going downhill. Too damned right things are shoddy, but they have made the rods for their own backs. The Govt. cannot make people greedy and self-obsessed. People managed that perfectly well by their own hand.

The Govt. and large companies/institutions are no different to most people, except for being on a grander scale. They give people someone to hate and blame, however, whilst at the same time allowing the people to shift the blame away from themselves.

That's pretty much what it boils down to. Human nature is the overpowering factor in most cases.

It doesn't *have* to be that way. However, until people take blame for their own mistakes, and accept the consequences of their own actions knowingly and willingly, things will never change.

Most people being what they are, however, I doubt it will ever change.
