on a side note we have to have a 4x4 for our police contract,we have a commercial disco,recently fitted with kl71's imh horrible on road but v good off road

Odd isn't it, how a tyres designed for purpose by companies with million dollar R&D budgets should do what it says on the tin (or tyrewall in this case).

Road tyres - good on the road, crap in the mud.

Mud tyres - good in mud, crap* on the road.

ATs - best of both worlds, if what you're doing isn't too extreme either way.






*I'm talking about aggressive muds here like Baja Claws etc. I'd regard BFG mud pattern tyres as somewhere between AT and full on mud tyre, and as such, that pattern (I had the Kumho version) work reasonably well on the road, but not as well as a good AT

ive had both baja claws and kl71s,
the baja claws are awsome offroad,but sometimes they do tend to bite back,especially when in dirt,you start spinning a wheel then all of a sudden they grip and by god do they grip and the truck just shoots off in all directions,sometimes sending you across a wire fence and into a farmers field.eh bio.on road i found the claws very noisy as you would for a mud tyre,but i also found they behaved pretty good on dry roads but crap in the wet.

the kl71s were very good offroad,not quite as much grip as the claws,but at half the price what do you expect.but on road was a different story,i found them to be just as good in the wet as an AT.road holding was good and noise levels were acceptable.if it were me i would go for the kl71s and keep them for on and off road use,but if you want extreme then go for the claws,or as apache said the the cheaper version the mudzillas.

hi all thanks a lot for the input found some kumho tyres 80% mud 20% road fitted balanced for about £60.00 we think (from the guy that imported the surf) just got to decide whether to get another set of wheels or whether to fit them to the car . i only do two short trips a day about 15mls each way plus i have never thought that the handling on the surf was very good so not sure that i could make it a lot worse don't need to drive it at weekends . but can i be bothered to change the wheels to go off roading ? ho hum wot too do.

I had Mudzillas, and they were truly terrible on the road. Truly truly horrible. It was like the steering was via elastic bands, the noise was immense, fuel consumption shot up, performance dropped loads, they wore faster than a very very wear-y thing.

However, they were amazing in mud.

I would NEVER have anything like that on the road again if I didn't have another vehicle to use. The BFG ATs are just a million times nicer, I've had them since last summer, they still look like new, and for laning they're just fine. I still have my Kumhos on another set of wheels at work if I think I'll need them, but to be honest, I dont believe I do. I've stuck them on once or twice but only cos I dont want to damage the BFGs, at least not before I get back from the Pyrenees.

thats easy to answer,they break easy,but are also cheap to fix.
