Dopey question re-rear lights

A typical bored on a Bank Holiday Sunday as it's damp and cold in Skeggy!... ...Always wondered about the rear light cluster on the 2nd gen..beneath the stop and tail light is what the owners manual refers to as a "back up light"...On my surf both NS & OS Light clusters in this slot are fitted with bulbs, but I can't find out how they switch..what exactly are the back up light's, I assume they were Japanese spec, but how are they powered / switched..do they work on main side light bulb failure? can they be utilised?
