  • Hi All

Evening everyone, my name is Jon and I have recently got hold of a 1992 Surf 2.4td auto SSR-X. I live in Hampshire, registered a couple of weeks ago but have been reading with interest a lot of the posts on here.

I've found this site a really good source of information, for instance I would never have known to only engage 4wd when "stuck" because of the rear difflock.

I've gone off-road in it three times now, along with some of my mates who have landrover discoveries, and one with a Suzuki Jimny. The surf well and truly holds its own, and I have been really impressed with some of the stuff it can go through.

I do have a bit of a problem which I discovered when I got home, but will post a separate thread up about that once this one has been validated/authorised.

    Cheers,

    Jon.

    Hi an welcome

Why only engage it when stuck? Mine is on most of the time when laning, not that I am an expert mind...

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome :-)

Bibs, from what I've read on here, 4wd is only for use on the slippery stuff or there is risk of damage to the diff... Is this not correct then?

I'm actually in Andover, anyone nearby? Hampshire is a pretty big county :-)

I know what you mean - not on Tarmac. Soon as it gets a bit muddy or stoney I put mine on an then only take it off when back on tarmac. Never had any probs - touch wood.

I chanced it once as it was the only way I could get up the hill - tight turns an very steep. Had to put it in low to get enough revs then turned up the music so as not to hear anything breaking an crossed my fingers.

          Seems fine thank god

Hi, welcome to the forum. I've done a fair bit of laning / off roading recently and I must admit that I rarely use 4WD unless it gets really sticky.

Not an expert compared to a lot of the guys (and girls) on here but I would advise that you use 4wd with caution, and never on tarmac in normal driving conditions.

The thing is that my surf is sooooo capable in 2wd, I don't see the point of using the 4wd unless I really am spinning the back wheels and not going anywhere... Once I hit that 4wd button though, it just seems to pull through anything

No, looking at your avatar pic it would seem you don't That's good advice, I am always in N and stationary when I hit the button, but I get what you're saying about the momentum thing...!

I read somewhere on here that < 5mph it's ok to engage it, but given that the gearbox is 17 years old, I'd rather just come to a complete stop. Heaven forbid I do something like blow a pipe or seal... Doh! I have!!!
