  • Maximus is dead.............

I've just found our Russian dwarf hamster - Maximus Decimus Meridius - dead in his little house. No sign of any illness, he just popped his clogs.

Well, this seems to be a bad week to be a hamster called Max thats for sure.

Just waiting to call my daughter Kate (working in Melbourne at the mo) to give her the bad news.

    Farewell little buddy

I was going to buy a hamster this week, but bugger it - there doesn't seem to be much point if it's going to shuffle off within a day or so - has anyone checked that Richard Hammond is still OK???
Too old to care, young enough to remember

I've taken a pic of him laying in state prior to his full ceremonial burial in the flower bed he used to romp about in.

I'll post it on his facebook page to let his friends know.

                      Is it definatley dead ?
They can go into a kind of sleep stasis where they basically shut down there body...
Been known for peaple to bury them only for the little buggers to wake up and dig their
way out only to reapear in the house and scare the sh1te out of the kids cus they think its a ghost....

"Hibernating hamster look very much like they're dead. They've fooled quite a few expert breeders.
There are also tons of stories of a dead hamster coming back to life.

Syrian hamsters can hibernate at 60 degrees. That's it. Just think of how cool your house can be in the winter.
All you need is a cold spot on the floor or by a window and a hamster can easily hibernate.
The dwarf species do not hibernate so if you have a dwarf, it's dead.

A hibernating Syrian will only have three heartbeats a minute and take one breath every two minutes.
They are very cold to the touch but are somewhat flexible, though if you let go of them, they will slowly draw back into a ball "

Check before you put him to rest....

We had one years ago that went into stasis and came back. My ex wife had put the cage out the shed in the winter. Put what looked like a dead Hammy in a sock on a radiator and out he crawled.

So although Max is a dwarf, he has been laying in state as I write this. Just to be sure. You never know etc.

I think he's dead though, there has been no movement, the flower bed awaits...................

ps - Hey Vince, that Freddie Starr joke was quite funny lol
