  • KZN 185 Auto transmission

Does my 3.0D '96 have a clutch of any sort? And how does the gears work? Are there any bits that go or burn out?

Don't really understand how gear change works in Automatic cars

    Any links/info/explanation would be appreciated

An automatic transmission consists of a big metal box full of magic that no-one understands. As long as you keep the fluid fresh and clean, there's very little that will go wrong with it. More details here, if you really want to know....

It's all done with fluid, solenoid valves and pumps.

Ooooh, and torque converters. They're really easy to understand!

How will I know if the ATF is ok? The truck had been pulling a caravan for three years on and off by a pensioner who I got the thing off but I doubt he caned it. Is it worth draining a bit off and check it?

Pull the tranny dipstick out and dab the fluid (cold obviously) onto your finger tips. It should be like a red wine colour. If it's brown and burnt smelling, it's shagged and needs replacing.
