      ?????????????????????????????? ??

Chains are far from safe, hence the development of kinetic ropes.
If you check up you will find that kinetics were developed (not invented but developed) for armoured vehicles in the forces.
Chains used to rip bits off both the recovery vehicle and the stuck one when attempting a snatch recovery, something that HAS to be done if you wish to recover in a short time.

A kinetic rope is very, very safe when used correctly. It goes without saying that standard tow points on a road vehicle will not take the load, they were never designed to.
One of the specs of a competition vehicle is that the tow / recovery points are immensely strong, and scrutineerd, and not without good reason.

The biggest problem with kinetic recovery, I'm sorry to have to say, is the users. You are dealing with quite big forces here (12T max) and still folk stand about 2 ft away eating sandwiches and drinking tea.
Would anyone stand under six Surfs held up with a one inch rope and calmly ignore it??? Would you put your patio table under them and sit the wife and kids down for tea, no, didn't think so.

Kinetic recovery is quite simple, hugely strong recovery points, one person in each vehicle and all the rest bugger off out the way
Communication between the two vehicles can be made by horn so no-one has vulnerable bits sticking out of windows etc.

Let's be fair here, it is done all the time with no damage or injury, it's just done by sensible people. So, be sensible, forget the bravado and everyone will go home happy.

And don't forget that when squaddies do it they're generally inside a large piece of heavy armour and pretty damned safe ! (Unless some antisocial barsteward is chucking lumps of depleted uranium about)

Life is too important to take seriously !

The other thing is squaddies will be trained in how to do it, whereas your weekend mudplugger may not be. Mind you, the vehicles I'm seeing coming through these days all have huge winches capable of self recovery, and some of these things weigh 20 tons!

A lifting strap will probably snap, or pull stuff off a vehicle if you just go belting off so the strap goes tight suddenly, whereas a kinetic rope SHOULD be loaded like that, then the energy in the rope does the work and the towing vehicle just becomes an anchor.

Any kind of recovery can be dangerous if the people involved go at it like loons.
