    Metal on metal when breaking I usually associated with worn out pads or shoes dependant if front or rear, if intermittent then I'd say they are not quite worn out yet but need changing real soon.

    With the prop shafts check you haven't got a seized UJ, as against a worn out sloppy one, as this could force it out of alignment when rotating and be the source what you are hearing .

    Changing AT fluid sounds like good idea too
