I'm going to the Pyrenees this year. I'm hoping for the offroad trip of a lifetime.

However, when I get back, what then?

Given the current economic climate, I wont be able to afford to go to the Sahara for a good few years, and the more I think about it, thats what this 4x4 ownership has become for me.

I no longer find my enthusiasm is for the vehicle itself, and though I do still sometimes get that buzz, it's not as much these days. What does make my spine tingle are the possibilities of where the vehicle could take me, but as I said, financial constraints and competing financial needs would probably stop me.

    Soooo...

I fully expect the Pyrenees will be my last offroad trip. As much as I love Wales, it probably wont cut it anymore, and I doubt I'll have the funds to go further afield.

So there you have it. The clock is ticking. I'll probably be looking for solace in an XK by the end of this year...

    i know the feeling
i sold a lot of my stuff and iam now down to my treasured things that may be worth a far bit but i cant let them go for the sake of a 4x4
and its the main way i keep it on the road and off
i have tryed smaller 4x4's but being this ill i cant do small and bouncy
and coz i not been out off roading for a while i too have lost the buzz for it
the wife has just lost her job so money will be even tighter than ever now

i may just roll it down a hill just to see what its like then call it a day on the surf and get something else
been thinking of this for 9 mounths now
feels like flogging a dead horse
am not die lex sick its you that cant read mate

not you too!! another friend of mine is badgering me to look at XKR's with her soon, or at the very least XK8's.

I got bored with stuff in the UK, especially after doing the rubicon trail.

I found if you get a daily driver, the truck becomes special again when you use it less frequently

I'm even starting to want to go offroad again, even short little boring greenlanes.

I'll second that. She feels so good after squezzing yourself in a hatch back for a fortnight.

thats exactly what i did. i put up with the corsa for the sake of economy........and i took the truck out recently and had a blinding day.
i have had to use the truck this week, and its been awesome, but only because i aint driven it for ages.think about getting a tiny runaround

I do not use the truck day in day out....... when i do use it i enjoy it , When i was using the 2nd gen as a toy as well as my daily drive it was a chore as if i broke it i had to repair it PFQ, get a small economical runabout and use the truck for a toy

anyway a small runabout will pay for it's self in fuel saving from the surf , Even with the prospect of unemployment i plan to keep the truck.

a brief summary of my motoring costs befor and after.

using the surf jan 2008-june 2008.

                  fuel approx £5000
                  insurance £150
                  sundries (oil etc) £20

using the corsa and keeping the surf on the road.

                  fuel approx £600 quid

insurance for surf £150, insurance for 6 months on corsa £65 quid

sundries (including surf rad and corsa spark plugs) approx £230 quid

so the surf cost just over £5000 quid to run,the latter 6 months the surf had about £300 quids worth of fuel (wales)

but i saved thousands by using a little runaround, and as tonyn saidm when it came to using the surf it was "exciting" again

andy I think theres a way you could maybe do all you want to.
work out what the sahara trip would cost to start with then approach it as a sponsored drive for charity. if you are willing to put the effort in to raise a minimum of tfhe same again on top of costs I think its doable. all the charity treks you see people doin g work in this way. it may even be possible to make a journey partly about taking some supplies to a project in the region.
If this interests you as an idea drop me a pm I used to be a professional fundraiser and weould be happy to give you any help I can ?

Altho I do understand a little bit where u are coming from..
                      (But getting rid all together?)
How about the charity run Idea from Biosurf here?
I will join that way because there is no other way I cud afford to go Africa otherwise either...

Good luck with that thorn up sole regardless.....
One day at the time I guess..

Take up golf. If you become golfists instead of surfers theres a saving to be had. Club membership, a few cheap hitting sticks, a pair of silly trousers and a passion for rules and regulations. You still get to go offroad ( ok its on foot) but no more surf mods/repairs/insurance/fuel to bother about.

An even cheaper alternative is to knit yourself a bobble hat from muesli and lentils, buy a pair of stout sensible shoes, ( help rid the world of those detestable trainer things) and start rambling ( in a walking way rather than in the verbal way that you do now). Even cheaper and still offroad.

Those are my top tips for today for disaffected Surfers.

Andy, stop being a gay and just enjoy or get rid. By Christ, most of the blokes are more girly than the females these days. Get a grip you wusses. Seriously, if I hear one more sob story or soul searching story, I'm gonna top someone.
