It's partly the nice three pointed star on the front and partly their reputation for being totally indestructible. That reputation is based on normal people though, they still bend if you crash into something

Well, how do I put this, suspension arms on Mercs are made of the same thing as on Toyotas.

If you're just going to destroy it, you'd be better off getting a cheap SJ ro Niva.

The only direct involvement I have had with a G wagen, is towing one off the Ridgeway (years ago) with a 2 wheel drive pickup loaded with logs. I drove passed them on the way in to get the logs too... In fairness it was full of idiots so they may not have understood all the buttons and levers!
          it's in me shed, mate.

That's the type of thing I'd be looking at, personally. The lightweights and Series also have some good long wheelbase options, do they not? Utilitarian, simple to fix and cheap for parts. They should suit you down to the ground.

I'd rather have a G wagon than any LR, solid axles, lockers in each axle, SWB, its almost as good as a 70 series 'Cruiser ('cept its not made by Toyota.)

don't have portals that i know of, your thinking of a 'Mog, but off to look....
