  • Uh oh!

Im about 99% sure my truck needs the steering recall doing!!

Past couple of days i've been driving it loads an its really shown up an issue with the steering clunking whilst turning the wheel.

It also, Always used to pull to the O/S a small amount whilst breaking.. Now the wheel just wobbles!

Its only just started occuring so i havent had time to check for any issues re: brake discs/pads.

Its booked in wednesday sometime to get a look over. Make sure its not a track rod end or dodgy brakes!

If its neither which from my quick poke around would suggest then i'd say the steering rod relay thingy is fubared.

I called Toyota GB aaages ago about it.. the women after 20 minutes of "i dont know what a hilux surf is" gave me the whole " we need to contact Toyota Japan to confirm your vehicle needs working on. we'll get back to you"

never did so i assumed it wasn't needed!

That'll cost me!! Unless my bestest buddy in the whole world Rich has one!

Actually thinking about it.. That would cause clunky steering an the wheel to wobble wouldn't it?!

EDIT: Actually there only £55 off Roughtrax... That aint bad!!

The steering rods break, eitheri nan accident, or after heavy abuse, so if your wheels are still pointing in the same direction, then its ok.

Not to say its not on the recall, but it isn't your problem.

                    Hi Tony Long time...

Rod, are you sure you haven't just thrown a weight. Those are big heavy tyres and throwing a balancing weight will give you a wobbly steering wheel.

Pulling when braking is probably a seized or sticky piston in a caliper. Pretty common with Surfs.

The clunking is most likely to be the idler as others have said. The nylon bearing / bush wears and slop increases making steering less positive though mine never clunked. First stop is to get underneath and watch for the arm to the relay rod rocking when someone moves the steering wheel. Sure sign that its bu99ered. If not, check ball joints on track rod ends etc. Check the ARB bushes while you're under there. They DO clunk when worn, and would clunk when loading up the suspension when turning.

My bet is wheel balancing though, as the bigger the tyre is, the more of an issue a slight out of balance is as the mass is further from the centre of rotation.

I think it might be an idea to check the ARB bushes, Yesterday driving back from southampton i had to go around some road works an the whole front end felt very sloppy.

I might head down my uncles in a bit an get him to look at it quick.

Other then monday its not an issue if i dont use the surf. Seeing a mate tuesday an im off bowling wednesday an the trucks to tall to get in there car park!

I'll check for wheel weights, I take it that it would be noticeable due to say a clean bit on the wheel or similar?!

Don't go to Lookers at Rayleigh for the recall.
