I once saw the after effects of a rod letting go on an Escort rally car engine (Pinto). The new owner had been told not to exceed 7000 rpm 'cos the bottom end wasn't balanced. First event, the red mist descended and he lasted about half a stage. The guy who had just sold the car got it back to rebuild - couldn't work on it for laughingRoger

I had a rod go through the block of my Vauxhall Chavette van back in the eighties, on the M4 just before the off ramp into Reading (Basingstoke road).
It kept running as long as I kept the revs up and I made it as far as Whitley wood lane.
