Sat Nav and Mem map for Mobile and laptop?

Morning all
I want to get some sat nav software and memory map to run on both my mini laptop with an external GPS aerial for driving and offroading and my sony mobile for driving and walking around London (with windows mobile)

Is there anywhere to get these programs at a reasonable price or is it a case of going throuh the main distributors for the obvious Tom Tom etc? Anyone got expereice of which sat nav programs work best on windows mobiles?

For the mobile, non Mem map stuff, ask your service provider - they may have a better deal than just going to Tom Tom. For Memory Map. you'll need the PC version then select a map area and copy that to the mobile device - so it's off to either eblag or the MM website.

i have tomtom on my winmo device. does the job nicely. the other thing to ask is, do you have free internet on your phone? if so google maps is quite handy, but it download the maps as you move through them i think.

just a normal phone, in which case you'll be looking at java applications, if it's a smartphone it'll be symbian based unless it's the experia which is windows mobile.

If it's one of the latter two there's a huge choice, if it's java not so much. Someone linked to this one the other day http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php , navigami is another java based one, but never used it and their website certainly doesn't seem to show it off too well. I don't think any of the major players in sat nav (tomtom, garmin, etc) offer a java solution yet.

It is the xperia, but it does seem to have some Java lilitations so not sure if if it will run all those or ot?


Naturally, you are able to install more than just native Windows Mobile games - JAVA is also supported, although it’s far from as good as most other Sony Ericsson phones, as you’ll soon find out. The XPERIA X1 supports the following Java Specification Requests (JSR):

* JSR-75 - File/PIM access.
* JSR-120 - WMA (Wireless Messaging API).
* JSR-135 - MMAPI (Mobile Media API).
* JSR-139 - CLDC (Connected Limited Device Configuration) 1.1.

As you have probably noticed, there’s no support for the 3D graphics JSR, JSR-184. The amount of available JSRs is rather limited, and Windows Mobile is to blame for this. In comparison, Sony Ericsson’s currently best phone at JAVA applications and games, the C905, supports no less than 24 JSRs, currently providing the best handset JAVA compatibility on the market.

The N95 is symbian OS based, so there's a bit of choice for that aswell alan, though having never had a symbian based phone i've never used any of them.

anything that runs windows mobile. i believe there's one that runs on symbian aswell using OS maps, can't for the life of me think what it's called though, which is making it difficult trying to find it on the web.

http://www.viewranger.com/ runs on symbian S60 which is what the n95 uses.




there's also one called xy mapping or yz maps or ..... or something along them lines which i think is available in both WindowsMobile and symbian versions.

Hmm Jury is out at the mo
Not had a winmo mo before so still getting my head around it but thats fine.
Speaker is weird, everyone sounds a bit like charlie browns teacher so it might be going back

the touch diamond (O2 Serra) is pretty much the same phone and has huge problems withGPS so waiting to get sat nav before seeing if it workss well enough.

On my third chargte now and battery lasts a day with not much use. I'll see if this improves

1 day battery is pretty much standard for a winmo.

It doesn't bother me, it gets plugged in anyway when i hop in the car, and plugged in every night before bed, so not a problem.

The main sat nav problem i have is it take ages to first find the satellites, once its got them its ok
