My jeep has an aftermarket front bumper from warn which is angled at the front and the original plate was here. It subsequently failed it's mot as the tester said it had to be straight up and down and not at an angle. It may be a mot requirement or maybe I came up against a jobs worth!
If it can be clearly read, is attached to the front of the vehicle, and is as close to vertical as it practical - you'll be fine. You can argue over the word 'front' and most coppers will say they interpret that as the bumper as opposed to the dashboard facing forward for example.
The only caveat to that is if there is a manufacturers designated area for the plate to be fixed to, then you should use that.
So if you've got a custom front bumper and no obvious place to fit a plate, bang it on the front of the bonnet and you've done all you need to. Stickers on the top of the bonnet wouldn't realistically be good enough for a stroppy copper though - not vertical enough.
Or, you do what a lot of my Supermoto buddies used to do back in the day and you leave the remains of a broken plate in the correct place and carry the rest of the broken plate with you. By remains what I mean is the two yellow plastic bolts lol. If pulled, it broke when you crashed offroad and you produce the rest of the plate. In actuality, no one ever got pulled. Ever.

I did say he was a jobsworth. I had no problems before that mot and I've never used him since. If I remember correct he said it couldn't be angled for speed cameras to capture.
Bloke at work here ran them for ten years, loved them, despite constant gremlins. Last one was a 156, serviced fastidiously, was driving to work and some major engine failure happened (I can't remember the precise cause).
Anyway, he had it towed to the dealers as it was still under warranty, dealer told him it would take 3 months to fix while they waited on parts. He said he'd leave the car with him and the dealer said he had no room, as he already had a few of them with the same fault parked around the back.
