Will add pics to the PH ad later today. One word of advice whatever you decide is to steer clear of ebay if at all possible. Plenty of people on there who have no idea what they're selling. I always look either on a forum or on Pistonheads when buying a car, they're likely to be MUCH better cared for.
Keep it mate go get a 2nd opion from a decent doc

I don't mean to offend, its just my personal experience. My brother has owned Surfs for the last 9 years and both of his 2.4s had head problems. He's owned a 1994 3.0 SSR-X Ltd for the last 4 years and its been good as gold.

I don't think the 2.4 is inherently unreliable. I just think that it requires more than routine maintenance to keep it ticking over. The vast majority of owners think that you service them once a year and they'll go forever. That is not the case with most cars.

Definitely agree about ebay - it's where I sold my Peugeot 106 after all But it certainly has a lot on offer if you don't mind doing more leg work. That 3.0 manual transmission one linked above still has me interested - waiting to hear back if it has air con (essential for where we're going, but it's not listed there).
You're very welcome. I'm more than gutted to have to sell, I'm still not utterly convinced that I'll go through with it. I'll have to see how the old back holds up. Surfs are great to drive, easy to maintain and brilliant value for money. Obviously there's a little room for negotiation in the price too.

I'm very tempted mate. The wife is somewhat less than enthusiastic though. All I'm hearing is: "You can get any car but you've only got one spine" embellished with plenty of nagging

Hey ross, would have thought a surf should be easier than a car to get in & out of cos you don't have to push your self up all the time when getting out. Are you sure your doc is'nt just a tree huger that wants all 4x4 banned or mybe he's a bland rover driver.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Bl@@dy right mate while like you woulnt turn down a 3 litre as a gift, but my 2.4 has done some harsh offroad days and then plenty of motorway miles home flat out and never let me down. The heads can go on any motor.

Whatever you get look after it check and service often

Quite possibly Si, we get all sorts joining up these days

My last car was a Saab 9-5 Aero estate and I had no problems with it but since driving the Surf I've been having a lot more back pain. Its not uncomfortable when seated at all, the driver's seat is very supportive. I think its just the getting in and out thats giving me grief. I was paralyzed from the waist down for a couple of days after the incident and I still get some sciatic pain from it, noticeably worse since I got the Surf. Its a damn shame because I love driving the thing.
