  • PC Problem, possibly Norton

Firstly, may I say I'd not personally give Norton (or anything to do with Symantec) house room, absolutely despise their software.

    Anyway, my mum's laptop...

...Connects to the internet for 1 day then will not re-connect. I go over, re-do everything to do with the router etc, laptop wil again re-connect for 24 hours then won't connect until I go over and muck about with it again.

It works fine if it's connected to the Virgin Modem, but won't work via the router unless it is reconfigured daily! I'm at the far end of my tether with it.

The only thing I can think of is Norton is blocking the Router when its DNS lease renews? I have had exactly the same set up as my mum (Shirley uses the same model of laptop) and haven't had an issue in about 10 years. The only difference is Norton.

Now, before I go and take Norton off her laptop, have any of you got any ideas why this problem may be happening, other than Norton?

set the channel selection in the router to 1, 6 or 11

the auto selection might select a not so good channel...
These 3 are the best and strongest channels..

The other channels are not very good in the UK and will cause the intermittent signal....

oh yeah and taking Norton off never hurts just put AVG on...
One day at the time I guess..

Andy, I take it the message is unable to display requested page. While the router stays connected to the internet i.e a ping test confirms this.

Ping test: This can be done by clicking on Start and then Run and then type command (making sure to remove anything else from the field) and then click OK.
Type ping 127.0.0.1 into the black command prompt, and then enter.
If you receive four replies your good. If your ping reply fails then it means that the TCP/IP protocol stack in your PC is corrupt. You will now need to reinstall TCP/IP. {not sure if the 127.0.0.1 is universal for all routers mate} I'm using D links the now

If you are running Windows XP you can simply refresh your TCP/IP by clicking on Start then Run and then typing command and then click OK. In the black command prompt type in netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and then enter. It should return back to a blank line into which you can type exit to close the command prompt.

I can have problems with DNS at times and when I check my router admin page my password sometimes reverts to a default and causing the problem as soon I input the correct username and pass and hit apply the thing works again.

I also had to manually set the DNS on wirless connetion it didn't/doesn't work selecting the automatically find settings.

You can also temp disable your firewall and try connect to google or BBC sites if this works it's the fecin Norton pish

This is as much as I know mate I'm very limited in my knowledge of these new fanggled witch craft things.
              Good luck with it mate

I also binned Norton for AVG
