  • Padlock/gate security advice needed

We keep horses locally and my wife shares a field locally with a couple of other people.
Lately and for no discernible reason, ourselves and others nearby, have had some unwelcome visitors, not apparently members of the tarmac guild, as nothing seems missing or even disturbed, but we have so far:
    One lock superglued
    another smashed or chopped off,
and last night, a motorbike combination with its own cable, apparently cropped off as it wasn't glue-able.

Does anyone have any suggestions for securing a galvanised steel gate, where there is no power present (so no to the obvious)

    thanks as usual

Don't think you can do that mate, but i could take my gun & sit & wait for a few nights "for a small fee" & all bodies would be disguarded properly with no trace.
If its not broke don't fix it.

              What's the tarmac guild?

Just tie it up with a bit of looped rope. If someone wants in, it's only a gate, they'll get in nae bother.

The trouble with electricity, beside the fact their are women present
(and horsey women at that) is that it needs wires to it.

We have been racking our brains as to who might be behind this, and given the visits occur both night and day, & involve bolt croppers or similar,
it looks increasingly like either a local farmer type or trade operating in the area,
either way, likely to be someone with (at least) enough brain to spot a battery and wire leading to gate.

but don't think for a minute thought hadn't crossed my mind too

best bet is signs for cctv, also security patrol, and if it were me id park discreetly somewhere out the way and just wait and watch, pref with a good camera that takes good pics at night, and a witness with you

Still think my idea is better

same sort of thing but without the witness & the camera.

If it's remote, then you either have to sit there and hope you outnumber them when they come back or remove EVERYTHING of value. If you go for plan B you will also have to make the site inaccessible to anything that might tow a caravan. I would also recommend an incredibly heavy dose of muck spreading. Might be worth asking around local farms to see what else has gone, also keepers and such like might be worth talking to.
Planning booby traps and vile revenge is all good fun, as is beefing up the security but largely pointless. Unless you spend thousands they will get in. Good luck!
                              it's in me shed, mate.
