  • Doing My Head In?

The heat exchanger bellow says you can use it on a one tank system, fine im with it so far. It also says you can mix whatever amounts of veg/dino you wish, ok im still with it. Plus you can have the glow plugs on till the engine gets up to temp, fine. The thing thats bugging me is, what if im running on just dino for a while, will it cause any probs heating dino without vo in it. Its probably a dumb ass question & im sure you will put me right.

Could'nt be arsed reading all the bumf but it looks like just a heater! suppose you have to switch off the glow plugs when useing reg diesel, and on with a heavy mix, dont see the point of it unless you useing a seperate veg tank plus i'm f##ked if i'd pay all that for it, some guys on here have machined up similar units, i'm sure for a price etc etc, i made a water heated one from copper pipe and had it nickel plated

Believe it or not , you can actually run your Surf on something called Diesel and it is apparently available from the same place that I buy petrol....
Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL

Thats one hell of a price for what it is, i made mine out of a piece of aluminum picked up from a scrap yard, a bit of work on the lathe and miller (you don't need these tools, they just make a better job) fitted 2 old glow plugs and a thermostat, the large hose tails are for water and the smaller ones are for derv, all in i think it will have cost me £20.

Not fitted it yet as derv has dropped and veggie has shot up.

Think its gunna be a case of finding out which is the best kit to use, ideally a 2 tank system & then paying one of you lot to do it for me, oh & by the way, don't want someone who says "ye mate its easy that, seen mi mate do his". I would prefer someone who has done there own & had no probs with it. Won't be till the new year, so if anyones up for it let me know, won't be expecting it for nothing either, as the saying goes "you get what you pay for". You don't even have to travel to me, i would come to you if you like, what da ya say guys, any takers?

I would be up for paying someone to fit one if you find anyone who is up for it too.

Maybe worth asking on vegetableoildiesel.co.uk too?

Someone on this forum could make a killing just converting surfs in his/her spare time.

Have a read through this, i never finished it as i could'nt get a regular supply of WVO and the price of new veg oil shot up, but it may give you the general idea, only things i need to do to finish it is fit a better changeover valve (teclemit or pevekoil) pipe up the veg tank filler and connect up the fuel lines, finish wireing etc

Jesus mate, ya don't do things by half do you. I was thinking more along the lines of a simple tank in the boot or under mounted, heat exchanger, or injector heater & whatever wires & pipes it would need. Not a full blown all singing all dancing "back to the future" set up like that, where did you fit the flux capasitor, by the way im not taking the mick, you've done an extremely good job there mate, its just that you are way way way way way way out of my league.

The thing is i know very little about fitting one of these veg oil system & would prefer to have a tried & tested setup that someone is actually using on a "SURF". Im intending on keeping the truck for a fare few years.

Hehe, thanks (i think) yup i knew f##kall before i started, help from guys on here (out old mate lang shanket scunner being one) and internet etc, if you click on the "bj blaster" link you'll see what going to town really is, that guys a nutter, his dad owns a veg oil recycleing plant which helps a bit, wether you stick a tank in the boot or fit one underneath the principle's the same,
you need to store veg in the truck,
you need to warm it a quick as poss,
you need to be able to change over from dino to veg
how ya do it is up to you, if you enjoy makeing up your own stuff! fine if not buy a ready made system, that way tho you are paying more and it'll take longer to recoop your outlay, none of the stuff i did there is rocket science, suppose being a plumber helps pipewise, but it aint hard, if you need any bits made up i'll do my best to help and i'm sure there are some guys on here who will machine up an alloy heater for you, ya need to decide which way you want to go and methods of heating the oil etc

alternatively you can forget this idea and just stick it in the tank, less in winter, more in summer, mix a bit of unleaded or white spirit and roberts ya fathers brother
