Can anyone suggest a RELIABLE internet provider that will allow me to use 2 different computers on any phone line I have .
At the moment I am with AOL and it is stopping me from alot of access to things like the chat room and downloading the off road videos . I have been told by a number of you that AOL is the prob .
This is the situation . I have my wifes laptop I can use anywhere in the house on the home line with any extension in most rooms or wifes buisness line , no prob . Main computer is on wifes buisness line in office , no other extention in house .
So if I want to be on line when she is using main computer I can plug laptop in anywhere to use internet . At evening time I sit in front of telly with laptop and plug in home line , no prob . Or when she is away from main computer I can dial in on this one on her buisness line . She does not want me upstairs on this computer and leave her on her own downstairs (it a love thing Ive been informed)
If I was to get Broadband it would restict me to 1 computer and 1 line ?
If anyone knows an answer you can have my 'Lauras star of the week '
So , any computer from any phone line at a reasonable cost - that is your challange

btopenworld probably your best bet, go broadband with a wireless adsl router, for more than one independant broadband connection similtaneously.

        Hi Rick,

Here I have 7 machines using the 1 BTOpenworld line !!!!

I have 1 machine log into the net, that has "internet connection sharing" running - the rest are set up to get their net access by the network - which is the that one.

So as long as the main machine is online, all the others can be online sharing.

        Hope this helps

sounds like UDTREV has set up a server as the main internet connection, the other machines are networked to the server, the plus side is all machines on the network can share files, the downside is the server has to be connected to the net for the other networked machines to get internet access.

the alternative is a broadband ethernet connection (router) which can be 'wired' or 'wireless', the advantages are the router is always connected so it doesent rely on a server connecting to the internet, the downside is pc's connected via the ethernet router cannot share files.

the easiest option from what you describe you would like, is have a broadband connection near the main pc, fit a wireless adsl router (adsl=broadband), with and adapter for the pc, and the laptop, both machines can be online at the same time or one at a time. PC WORLD should be able to sort you out

Thanks for your reply . All sounds a bit much for me but I am sure PC World will be able to respond to these replys with a bit of kit to do the deed .
I will look into a new provider like bt as now back on bt line after NTL failed to maintain a non vandal service . ie keep the local yobs out of the cabinet by the side of the road . If the yobs want to pull out the wires now they need to climb the poles to do it .They will probably try , they climb everything else there is .

Stara is right as regards my set up, but rather than BT (whom I use) can I reccommend these guys whom I intend to move to

You sound like you need a home network either hardwired or wireless. wireless is easier hardwired is cheaper. with a network you can have a boardband connection via a ADSL hub (best with a firewall) which will give you 4 ports. you can add print server etc and use any computer and connect ot the internet using any number of ISP. I use tiscali and have had no problems( famous last word) but BT, NTL etc all give a reasonable service.

A hardwired lan will cost about £120 with intenet connection and about 1 day installation

ps your reasonable local to me so if your like some help drop me a PM

i've got two computers networked on a linksys wireless-g (54mbps) adsl gateway, with a wireless card in your laptop, you can use it anywhere in your house/garden,it was reasonably easy to set up even for a plonker like me.i'm using freeserve broadband and they don't like you sharing your connection. this way, they don't know.try this site it may help.

OK , looks like I got plenty of options . Guess the slick little spotty faced twerp at PC World will get another chance to relieve my wallet of some wonga .

But with all this info I should have a fighting chance of a fair sale of product . First I will check out the broadband providers as suggested and then all the options of wireless etc

                          Thanks Rick

                            Hi Rick.

We use a wireless router that comes with one tranceiver but is able to connect several more. This was simple to use and if you go for broadband on any of the NTL packages it works a treat allowing many pc's to browse simultaniously.
Info for the one we use is here - http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hard...quicklinx=2VHG

Very sorry it is a retailers and no, I have nothing to do with them in any form other than a customer myself, but this site gives a good info sheet on what the router does.
