  • rear brakes sticking

Noticed over the past few days the rear brakes are sticking on when i release the hand brake, checked them only last month as a routine service, drums were fine "not scored" & there was plenty of meat on the shoes, all looked in very good condition. Ive not been off road so there is no crap inside them, only thing i can think of is that the weather could be the cause, it been really cold the past few days, -2 over night or could it be something else?
If its not broke don't fix it.

Rear shoes need adjusting, or the drums are worn.

also check to make sure the arm through the back plate that attaches to the brake cable moves freely.

The handbrake linkage on the back plate is known to seize on 3rd gens and not let the handbrake release fully . If you free it up and copperslip it it should be fine until next service .

URGH...I;m having a nightmare with this same issue.

Is it really a known issue on 3rd Gens?

Its been into 3 garages (one of them twice) and no one can understand whats going on.

The last guy ground down the shoes and now its a real bl**dy mess.

I'm at my wits end. Its been a problem for a few months. Fixes for a month and then comes back and the hand brake goes slack.

Must be to do with the ratchet in the drum??

I simply dont know where to turn or what to do now...

If anyone can help (and thanks to Barry at Roughtrax for the advice, the last guy followed it to the letter and it lasted a month or so) I;d really appreciate it.

Anyone in Kent area know someone who might have a clue about how to service my beloved Surf and get it back on the road?

Barry, I guess I'll be ordering some new drums or shoes in the near future after my last 'mechanic' got handy with his grinder!!!

Any help gratefully received lads (and lasses) I dunno what to do now...

PS How can I check if the drums are worn, I;ve had a look at them but they look ok to me (given I run a broadband operation I;m unlikely to know if they are or not) what should the diameter be?

Turns out mine was the linkage that needed a bit of grease, plus i had to ajust the handbrake cable a little bit. If you need to ajust the cable all you need to do is slacken the two 10mm nuts at the base of the handbrake lever, the centre console piece with the ECT switch pops out fairly easy to alow access to the nuts.
If its not broke don't fix it.
