autobox wont hold itself on a hill??

i've driven alot of autos and everyone of them would hold the vechile stationory whilst on a hill in drive. my surf won't,it rolls back the second i take my foot off the brake.
wot u reckon is up with it? knackared atf fluid, or worse...

It's caused by low fluid pressure in the transmission due to old fluid or low level. (check level with engine idling)

You could always press the idle up switch on the dash to increase the engine revs too.

yeah i did that but kept forgetting to switch the thing off!!

ah well gives me an excuse to get out the house n get greasy.

Idle up only works in PARK or NEUTRAL never DRIVE.
change the ATF asap. My 2.4 will hold a 2 tonne trailer with no probs
on a steep hill.

Oops, yeah you're right. It's been a while since I had an idle up switch.

right i've changed all the atf today and it's made no difference at all,any other suggestions?

Press the brake when on an incline

this is normal.

The engine is connected to the transmisison by a device called a "torque converter" that is basically like a sliced bagel with vanes inside of each half and filled with fluid. When the engine is revved to accelerate, the front half of the bagel spins, the vanes drag the viscous fluid along, the fluid drags the back half of the bagel which pulls the car along. At idle there is very little force being transmitted
