POPEYE, i notice your little caption says 2.4 td intercooler, did yours come with an intercooler or did you fit one yourself? If so did notice an appreciable difference?

Hi david, yup i fitted the intercooler, pretty sure they did'nt do a factory intercooler on the old 2.4 (if that's what you ment) it's not too bad a job to do and made a whole lot easier if you have/do a 1 1/2 to 2" body lift, that gives you a bit more room to play with between the top of the engine and the bonnet, intercoolers and hood scoops are always on ebay as is the silicon hose, (thats prob the most expensive part if it) it actually does make a difference (once i blocked up the small hole i missed) but dont expect miricles,
theres several mods you can do to help it pull ya out of bed,
some have managed to fit intercoolers alongside the engine (without a lift)
if ya want any pics/help with any of the stuff below let me know
            1 intercooler
            2 remove the egr
            3 tweak the compensator
4 washer out the turbo gate
5 fit new injectors (got to do that yet)
cant think of owt else (just got up tho) anything else anyone?
            or fit a lexus V8

POPEYE, I had allready heard about washering out the actuator and will be dabbling with a couple of 2mm washers some time soon (dont want to go too far without a boost gauge yet), am i correct in thinking that if i do go too far (boostwise) that the computer will spit it's dummy out and go to limp home mode (better than melting a piston or two)? Also what did you mean by "tweak the compensator"?

Yes too much boost and i believe the ecu cuts summat out, the compensator was talked about a while back, cant remember all the talk but turning it 5-6 clicks clockwise was supposed to give the engine that much more fuel, it did seem to make some difference on acceleration when i did it but there warnings from some guys about overdoing it, it's situated on top of the injector pump under a round "tin"cap, lever that off and you'll see a small screwdriver slot, holt that with a screwdriver and loosen the locking nut, turn it clockwise 5-6 clicks (clicks are very fine) it pays to mark the original position with a dab of white paint and also the new position, tighten the locknut while holding the screwdriver in position and stick the cap back on,

Yeah, more fuel = more heat on a diesel engine. On a 2.4, more heat is NEVER a good thing!

Yup! that was it, more heat, have to say tho i did'nt really notice any increase in temp, it did seem to go a bit faster after tweaking it but that could have been wishfull thinking, if your unsure leave it be, or if it dont improve the acceleration you can always turn it back,

I bought the old girl into the workshop on saturday to tackle the slack belt issue (x2 fan belts and alternator, the power steering belt was ok). After a lot of head scratching i saw that some ###### had snapped the head of the alternator belt adjuster bolt and just left it there!! After some 20mins of growling at it i finally managed to remove the adjuster bolt and weld a nut back onto it and grind it all back so it looked right (i didn't have another bolt of suitable length). Got the alt belt tensioned right and moved onto the fan belt and found the adjuter bolt on this one was nearly hanging out!! Undid a few bolts and got that one tensioned right too. All sounds good now so hopefully the harmonic balancer is playing the game. Whilst i had it in the workshop i took the opportunity to scrabble around underneath and all looks good, no rust and fairly clean (phew!). I did notice that some kindly soul had left out the two front (12x1.5) bolt out at the front of the gearbox oil cooler!! I also put a 2mm thick washer between the turbo and actuator on each of the two bolts, and it's livened it up nicely. As i said before i havent yet got a boost guage (anybody got one for sale or know of a cheap but working one for sale anywhere?) so i wont go any further than that. Thanks for the tips POPEYE.

Your welcome, theres always some farly cheap gauges on ebay, but would'nt reccomend going too cheap, made that mistake with two oil temp gauges, look nice but toss all good, they were from china from a german in scotland!!!
