  • Which tools?

Ok as christmas is looming I thought this would be a good thread to start.
Main reason is because I'm getting more confident with my Smurf.

What tools should I have in my garage (for using with the truck that is)?

Everything from the obvious bottle / trolley jacks and socket sets, to the less obvious (what ever they are! they aren't obvious to me!).

I think this could be a good thread for any newby. Also any tips with regards to tools ie which makes are better / cheaper etc.
    Sooo, . . .

What should every Surfer who wants to maintain their truck have in their garage??

My tip. Buy quality tools rather than a lot of cheap ones. The really cheap nasty ones will make you regret you bought them and possibly hurt you when you use them. Avoid the overpriced, overrated crap from Snapon. There's a lot of cheaper and quite good quality stuff out there. Try to avoid Chinese. Some of the Taiwanese stuff is pretty good. I have no idea of brands over there so do some research.

Britool or Halfords professional, anything else is a waste of money.

I'd get a set of punches.

a gear puller. They can be had for around £10+ from Machinemart.

              Breaker bar

              Torque wrench

socket set (halfords do a very decent set as mentioned)

              spanner set

              Set of deep sockets

              some screwdrivers

              hammer/saw/pliers etc etc

Most of that stuff should see you sorted for most jobs.

I have to admit I get most of my stuff from Machine Mart or screw fix.
Hoping for an angle grinder this christmas and a decent trolley jack.
I've found that a decent set of chisels are great for prying things apart, as long as your gentle to start off with.

think the most useful tool i've had since fiddling with the truck is a roll of plaster and some micropore tape for when it goes wrong!! oh yeah and beer take the pain of skinned knuckles away too!!

Seriously though halfords prof stuff look great, especially the ratchet spanners (they're on my xmas list). some WD-40, and piece of scaffold pole to slide over and spanner or ratchet to get some more leaverage, as most fo the nuts have not been undone in 14 years.

I'm finding with the cheap and nasty tool i've got, that i get any nut 2/3 off before knackering the ratchet or snapping the spanner. then panicking as i have no way of either removing or tightening back up what i've just undone.

It has made me good freinds with the neighbours though!

I was just looking at ratchet spanners.

Machinemart do a set for just shy of £20 an its 3 spanners with 6 different ratchet heads.

Halfords do a 33 piece set (got some screwdriver bits in so it aint 33 spanners) for £40..

                        dunno which ones to get!

Machinemart well, Clarke stuff isn't too bad. Most of it comes with a lifetime warrenty. The ratchets dont! its only metal work. So your more likely to bust a ratchet before you fluck up a socket!

most of my stuff is snapon but all the last gear i got is Britool / Halfords professional / teng . if you can find it blue point is a cheaper snapon brand and just as good.

as for what you need mmm.
2 foot crack bar and green flag cover

i would get the best you can first time round.

My son's a vehicle tech, and most of his tools are snap on, including his massive tool chest, you can't even lift it when it's empty!!. bent a 500kg tail lift when moving to another garage. total cost so far? £8,000.00 and that does not include a £1000.00 scanner!! and he keeps buying more. try quality tools not the most expensive ones, saying that there is'nt a job we can't tackle at home from my own smallish tool box, and other equipment built up over a period of time.

EDIT: a BIG bucket of swear words LOL
