  • Bleedin/Burpin Problems

After i changed my head i have not managed to bleed/purp the coolant, i seem to get it nearly there and then leave it over night or for the day nd have to put in and extra pint every time, when i open the rad cap i get a hiss so i still have a little pressure in the system after 8-9 hours, it has had a new rad cap and thermostat and runs up to temp, no problems, can it be anything but the new rad cap.?

I would have thought that you would get a bit of a hiss due to the pressure in the system. I would say its alright mate if it runs ok.

A little pressure in the cooling system even after this period of time is always possible. If the ambient temperature has risen a little in the morning compared to overnight this can even create a small amount of pressure because the radiator cap will not relaese pressure until around 13PSI. Having to top up all the time is a different story though and points to coolant loss so check for leaks both when engine is hot and cold.

My biggest problem is that i am loosing 1 litre of water every day, i have no leaks that i can see and no white smoke, there is no water in the oil either.

i lose about that much water mate
i think it gets spat out?

how long was your engine stud for whil the head was done
          mine once sat for mounths
the crud blocked up in the engine some were
air locks every day kept makeing me over heat

have you tryed to flush the full system out?
          it worked for me
am not die lex sick its you that cant read mate

What happens if you don't run it? When you say lose a litre a day, out of the rad or out of the expansion tank?

Replace the rad cap and thermostat and check everywhere for leaks. You sometimes see a whitish powder where the coolant is leaking if it is seeping or blowing out and burning off when the engine is running.

i have not had chance to try it without running the engine so i don't know if it will loose it then, all i can say is a 5.30 in the morning i still have some pressure in the system so i can only assume the leak, if there is one, must be small.???
I have replaced both radiator cap and thermostat, still the same problem.
I have just removed most of the pipes and flushed them all with water at 2bar pressure, i have also flushed out the heater matrix until the water was clear, all pipes have been refitted with new clips, this is where I am at now, i have fitted a vent and fill cock to the heater pipes and filled through there the engine has then been run and coolant/water seeped out of the pipe into the expansion bottle, as you would expect, i have bled any air from the heater pipes and now have to wait for it to cool to see what water is left.

My thoughts are that there was a air lock, running the engine up to temp caused the air to expand quicker than the water and pushed steam out of the expansion pipe then condensed back to water, this left air still in the system from the missing steam and this could not be sucked back into the engine as there was air at the top and it just vented.

                Or I'm talking Cr~p

How much coolant did you put in the system after you first flushed and emptied it?

have to use it every day so can't not run it, after getting home from work the truck is parked up and in the morning it will be 1 liter short in the rad, so i fill it up and drive to work 15 min drive, park it up, check fro leaks, non, when i come out from work after 9-10 hours, i have to put another 1 liter in, no obvious leaks and still a little pressure in the rad.

All I can say is that after TonyN did my head, he told me to check the coolant before every drive for a few weeks and top up as necessary. It took a fair bit for a few goes, so it may exactly as you say Roy.

I would consider trying the old rad cap too. It's not unknown for a new one to be dodgy and it could be that it's bypassing the cap and just chucking coolant out of the bottle.

Good question, unfortunately no answer, as i am filling with the hose pipe so can't tell, trying to put it in at a slight pressure to try and remove any air locks

Hmmm, i have 3 rad caps on the go, two new and one old one.

                              Probably not that then

If you're filling it with a hose, I reckon you're probably creating a lot of airlocks, rather than solving them....

You would be much better off filling it very slowly. Some people fit a little valve on the highest part of the system (up by the bulkhead) to give the air a route out as they chuck the coolant in.
