    As Alan said, slacken back all the nuts a wee bit (2 or 3 threads) then all that's needed is a we bit of even tension on the two 8mm bolts and a tap from a rubber or nylon mallet. The whole lot slackens off easily. Nae need for a metal hammer.
    Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

      hey daithediver

      I have exactly the same job to do following my recent MOT

      had a quick look and face the same issue with the cones, doesn't look like they have ever been off but having done 148k miles they must have been a some stage. Maybe as it had full mdsh guess they could be replaced them with new each time?

      anyway can i confirm that you need a wedge shaped tool to insert round the rim of cone to tap out

      once removed does the hub need to come of to get at the bearing or can this be accessed with hub intact. I have seen somewhere that a 54mm hub nut spanner is required but then think there was another size mentioned?

      can someone confirm as I will need to get one as don't think got anything that big other than stilsons!! and dont want to go there

      thanks

        Do it the way Kerrsurf described above no need to hit, punch, whack, kick
        O and the photo with the lovely cone tool shows a manual hub{on a surf the warn hub uses spring not cone anyway} which has no draw bolt holes so ignor that. Or maybe Toyota just put the draw bolt holes in for a laugh. You will also need a 54mm socket unless you fancy chapping the nut's off with a hammer and a screwdriver. But again that's a whole hearted recommeded option in some write ups. However I bought the socket, up to you. Good luck fella. {O and stilsons wont fit in the gap}

          to replace bearings the hub does need to be removed, be careful with brake lines when clamping caliper out of the way.

              If you are only taking up a small amount of play and the bearing is ok,ie no rumbling and running smoothly,you can take up the slack without removing the hub,just the end cover with those lovely cone washers.I dont have a 54mm spanner,I used a centre punch and gently tapped the inside nut to remove the play after removing the locknut and locking washer.Just enough that there was no movement when the disk was shaken top to bottom,then replace the locking washer and nut,bend the tabs over and replace the cover with a new gasket,(made my own),and copperslip everything as you put things back to avoid my original problem.

                  Wel guys tackled the other side today,N/S,and encountered the exact same problem,armed with every ones suggestions I tried the lot,it took two and a half hours this time.I even tried using acouple of old box spanners,one that just fitted over the studs and rested on the end on the cone washers,tapped with hammer,no joy that way.Then tried one that fitted over the cone washers resting against the hub cover,again no joy.In the end I just kept hitting the edge of the cover opposite the washers till they finally popped out.I don`t think I would of got them out at all if I had left them over winter.Still all done and copper slipped now,thanks again guys for your helpfull advice,the forum came up trumps yet again
