  • more geeky stuff with pc's

since monday i have been playing with a setup ive got at home. ive managed to get a webserver up and running with a forum just like this one.

i plan to figure out how to do dynamic pages so that they basically create themselves once i have made the initial templates etc.

i tried to do this when i was 15 and got stuck for months, then gave up.. this time its taken me 2 days! its amazing how the internet can teach u stuff!
i dont have a propper dns name, and probably wont bother since the one i got is free..

just need to decide what to do with it
    i called it a divv!

Dynamic pages for which part? It's pretty much all dynamic by virtue of what it is.

                HAHA yea its windows!
i installed linux for the sole purpose of doing this,
but i thought it would be too much trying to figure out Linux AND php and anything other than html / basic java that i havnt done before!

im just worried about not having my equipment locked down enough.
i was thinking of locking down my firewall outbound as well, but ill have a Cisco ASA soon so ill just wait till then i think.

well, i want to be able to have a template of some sort, and have a script fetch another file purely for the body so that if i decide to make changes to the design (which i usually do) then i can make the change to one file as such and it will do 'em all.

but ill get round to that at some point in the future, because you will end up having one page, taking up 3 or more files.
1 for the body, 1 for the template, 1 for the actual page that has the code to fetch the other files, then if you want extras, say a dynamic menu, then you could create a table and have the php code fetch another file purely for that.

i would like to have all my pictures and music made into pages so that i can share my photos and may be stream music, or let people download certain files.

for some reason, this time round, doing this seems 100x clearer when i read into it. except i dont have a lot of time, with work going on, and i have a CCNP course starting in 2 weeks.

                  im using wondows server 2003.
this is a virtual machine, running on an overclocked vista host machine.
may be i should have also used windows server 2003 as my host machine, but i like vista and how it works, the only downside is that its a bit RAM hungy.
server 2003 seems to only want 80mb of ram once its loaded up and ive logged in,
vista seems to want 700mb - 1gb once i have loaded up, logged in and loaded server 2003.

ive also setup dns on the box, and i will be sorting out dhcp so i can propperly set reservations since my firewall router does this, and is a bit pants at doing what its told.

hey mate just a thought or two...
Yeah lock everything on windoze.... lol

Linux is a stable platform just set up a ftp and u are off with everything..
Then u don't have to worry to much..

The dynamic u are describing is possible,
Joomla might be a good source for that type of code..
I think that they might have scripts very close to what u want so all u have to do is adjust it to your specs and off u go....
also have a look at the PHB forums and on software from BoonEx or something they do provide things like that. altho the BoonEx scripts do ur head in after a while
One day at the time I guess..

I'd have a peek at one of the portal mods for phpBB, seeing as you've already got that up and running. The basics of it should be very close to what you're wanting. Other than altering the db queries for the info you wish to display, the rest of it should require only minor adaptation to the template and/or CSS.

I'd agree with Toby over the Boonex code. Only had a quick look at that stuff, but it appears to be fairly evil.
