  • I'm 17 and want a Surf, Am I completely bonkers?!

Title pretty much sums up the question, do I have any chance to get a surf insured at all? I don't care who I go with and just want basic 3rd party, but is it possible?

I've been driving a new 1.0Ltr Corsa since April and just cannot stand it anymore, going up a hill with the back full of camping gear is terrifiying!

Hmmm don’t know, you might be able to get insurance on a 2.4 Surf.... but don’t expect it to be any better climbing hills, the little 2.4 can’t pull the skin of a rice pudding

There again, is the 2.4 in a lower insurance group than the 2.4 TD or 3.0 trucks?

Hey my 2.4 climbs hills. Maybe not at speed, but with a good tailwind it makes them

Wouldn't like to say what insurance would be like for a young guy as yourself. Think Rod Leach would be best person as he's the youngest around here (I think) Try Adrian Flux or A Plan for a quote

Try www.moneysavingexpert.com it has advice on how to get insurance comparisons and how to reduce your premiums (for instance naming one, two or more parents would bring it down or get one of them to insure it and have yourself as the named driver maybe?)
Out of interest (and I know this seems stupid but bear with me) try gettign a quote for a parent as the main driver and yourself as the named driver but stating that you have your own car. It could be that it would be cheaper to buy and tax a 1litre lowest insurance £200 car and insure yourself on it third party then get your parent to put you on 'their' Surf policy as a named driver and you pay for both.
Probably not but if all you get quoted are sky high premiums you may as well get a quote to see.

in answer to your main question: Yes you are. You'll fit in nicely.

Try here for a list of companies that will cover surf's, don't know what they'll charge for your age.

                Adrian Flux:

Thank you for requesting an insurance quotation from Adrian Flux Insurance, the UK's top specialists motor broker. From the details provided it appears that we can not offer a quotation at this time due to the risk details disclosed.

                Performance Direct:

                Your premium is £7,233.45.....

                Jesus...

I've been driving for 5, nearly 6 months so I expected quotes in the thousands, but wow.. for the speed and age of a surf that's ridiculous

get a relative on the insurance

get your mum / dad / other relitive to insure it, and be a named driver. if you want to be the named policy holder, then try and get an older female driver on it as well, and your premium should reduce.

7k is outrageous in anyones books.

do the 'boy racers' in their clios and saxos pay that much?

                    surprised by adrian flux.

my guess is that the premium is high more to do the possibility that young uns have a higher cost per incident????

Oh it gets better, I've just got a quote topping £10,000. Do they expect me armor plate the truck and drive through a couple of buildings?!

Looks like I am going to have to go with being a named driver on my parents policy.

I was recently insured on my parent's 2004 2.0L TD Mondeo for three weeks with a reasonable price when I drove to Scotland, which I would guess is faster than a surf, so I can only assume that when insurers see '17' coupled with '4x4' they run a mile

if i had more money than sense, i would be tempted to pay it, then go and crash into a VERY expensive car (f1, veron etc), or something similar, just to make them pay out hundreds of thousands....
no, of course i wouldnt, but it would be FUN

dont know if theres any mileage in this but the very posh dont you know girl at work (dunno what shes doing working here!) said that her friends who were bought porsches when they were young used to get life insurance policies that could also be extended to cover your car as well as that apprently often worked out cheaper than stright car insurance alone.

No idea whether shes talking nonsense but cant hurt to look in to?

                          Over £10K- thats impressive!

I'll ask the young drivers on another site who they are insured with

Thanks for all the help guys, even if you think the idea silly please post it! Can't be worse than £10k insurance!

Got a great email for one company 'We are delighted to be able to offer you a premium of 9,517.75, for the details you have provided, which are outlined below.'

Yes they would be delighted getting money like that.. And that's a different company to the one who quoted over £10k, so there is even more than one!

                              Holy shit!

I pay less than £300 fully comp with full protected NCB!!! How the hell can they justify more than 30 times as much!?!?

Bet you haven't had an accident yet? In my motoring years (more than 20) I've had 3. A real humdinger 'sky-ground-sky-ground' total loss and a couple of minor 'stupid git' bumps, but pay so much less?

Explain that one! Insurance companies, almost worse than injury claim lawyers!
