  • Front prop spins but no 4WD ?

    Hi All

Read many of the previous posting about 4WD problems but not all. I have a gen 3
The front prop spins when 4wd is selected but no drive to front wheels, when pressing the 4wd button it clicks and clucks prop spins still no drive to front.
Iread this has no ADD system so have checked the vacuum pipes and all seem in good order oil level in box is fine ?

Have tried all settings on wet grass, Front prop spins but no drive to wheels. I have it up on jacks at present, gonna try removing the electric bits and check there clean and not corroded as read in other posts this can cause drive to fail.

if it's on wet grass, how can you tell there's no drive to front wheels?

              The rear spins like mad.

Just taken off the wires that lead to front diff some sort of pressure sensor all is clean and free moving. vacuum pipes to same area are all in place?

When selecting 4wd on the button prop spins, lights on dash all flash green for wheels orange for centre diff.
Selecting on the stick same as above wether in 4H or 4L.
When in N the orange diff light stays on no flashing and the green lights for wheels are off.
How can I tell if the front diff needs replacing?

it makes a crunching noise when you turn in 4wd... like the gears are eating themselves!

put it in 4wd and jack it up... turn one wheel and the other should turn the opposite way

Got no noise coming from front end or gearbox, what else will effect the front drive system and stop it selecting drive to front wheels.

if the lights on the dash are flashing it isnt in 4wd.you need the four green wheel lights on to be in 4wd and if you want the centre diff locked then the orange light aswell (do not use on the road with orange light on)if they flash for more than a few seconds it is not engaging

mines a 2gen- but on wet grass or mud in 4 wheel high and auto D selected- just off the button without moving the high or low shifter into low, the backs will spin and the fronts will drive it allong,

you say in your post the rear spins like mad but does it still move allong? or does it dig itself in.

I'd have thought that if neither of the front wheels move then 4wd isnt working.

If the rear has lost traction chances are the front end might too so at least one wheel would spin.

'i can see what you getting at'

but if only driving slowly they might not. i know that my 4 wheel drive gets me out the crap quite often and the backs tend to spin more than the fronts, i think its to do with the different gear box ratioes.

perhaps it would be an experiment for him to be in 4x4 on wet grass or mud at a standstill and then put his foot to the boards to purpously loose grip and see if the fronts do spin. because by the way ime reading the posts at the moment with nothing wrong hear or there it sounds like hes got a front box with no guts in it. or no axle/s
