  • diy tow bar

Hi all, Can anyone please tel me where I can get detail for making my own tow bar for 3ltr 1994 surf? I've spent so long looking now, there must be loads of info on the web but I cant find a thing & its really frustrating me, thanks, LEE.

    afternoon Lee

I really wouln't bother making your own - they are so cheap nowadays (just check on ebay).

Also if you make your own and something nasty happens, there is no comeback and you might find that your insurance is invalid (non approved modification).

Bite the bullet & buy one

    hope this helps

Quite aggree, there weas a bloke doin em for £40 a while back on ebay, i got one, made in china but very good for the money, i doubt you'd be able to buy the steel to make it for £40 ont thougher hand if you've access to free steel and are good at welding you can make one to your own design,

            instructions.

bolt 2 bits of metal to chassis rails
weld another bit across the 2
bolt a hitch on to that bit.
make sure the hitch is roughly in the middle

won't be type approved though, and VOSA ae getting pretty hot on dodgy towing these days

I wouldn't reccomend making your own mate, not when there so cheap to buy.
But Vosa cant touch a home made towbar fitted to a vehicle manafactured before 1998, unless the worst should happen.

Five years ago I totally rebuilt my old Land Rover so I can appreciate the satisfaction that comes from doing your own fabrication, but is all the cutting, grinding, drilling, and painting (with the uncertainty it will actually fit) really worth the bother when you can pick one up second hand fairly cheaply?
Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL
