  • Failed MOT!!! AARRGGHHH!!!

    Damn it!

Steering idler got too much play and needs replacing

    Same story for upper balljoint

The brake pedal is slightly split (they apologised about this and said its crazy that the clutch pedal can be polished metal but brake has to be pristine

Parking brake is pretty much not working, not sure why, may just need crud cleaned out

Rear fog lamp doesn't work and is insecure (have to give it some counselling) detached it from where it was for the last few months and cable tied it high behind the bumper. Had to get to the bent bracket with a pair of pliers to attach it the other day. Did work last time I looked though

They can sort it for me on Thursday. Just called Milners all the bits came to £99 inc delivery by midday Monday thanks to a bit of discount for being a member of fourwheeldriveclub (knew that would come in handy sometime)

And there was me thinking the next time I called them would be for things to play with, not things I needed! Grrrr!!!

Sorry to hear that ... but sure you'll have that smile again soon ....

    Tip..
My rear Fog lamp used to hang down, till I took it off, (Off roading) so I bent the bracket up n bolted it in the very same place as before (level with the Bumper n it survived n doesn't hit the tailgate when it's down either..
    Jobs a good en

He's just quoted me for the labour at around £250 -300 unless the handbrake problem turns out to be really tricky

does this sound in the right ballpark for all the work?

Thanks god this has come just after payday

Seems alot to me, those jobs are easy enough to do yourself IMO.

Rear brakes will be full of crud and the auto adjusters will be seized, not that hard to fix, drums off, clean, and free off adjusters and then adjust brakes.

Steering idler is easy if you have a ball joint splitter (£15)

Upper balljoint I have not done on a Hilux but I would not expect it to be hard with the above splitter.

Rear fog lamp doesn't work and is insecure, fix and fix (New Bulb? or maybe rewire)

I would think all jobs are 3 hours at the very most for a Mechanic.

Only if you're competent or comfortable with doing it by oneself. If he's not mech minded, the peace of mind is worth the price.

P.s: That's not exactly a bad fail, by the way. All that on a +/- 15 year old vehicle ain't major.

This is true. Still hurts though

As to the mech minded, getting better at the mech stuff after never going near a motor until the advent of Surf ownership but not convinced on the balljoint splitting. I have a tendancy to break things!

As I found out the hard way, the simplest way to split a joint where any ball type joint with the tapered shafts are concerned is to give the casting around the tapered shaft a resounding smack with a hammer. Works a treat.
