Yup, the 'blanking plate' is recessed to make a pocket for putting junk in, very handy for sliding a Large McD's frys into while eating and driving.

Thanks but the two Halfords nearest to me are a bunch of useless ***** and just look at you blankly if the part you require is not for a 3-series BMW or a ford Escort.
I went there this weekend for the stereo bit, some mudflaps,a pair of spotlights, some autosol, and an immobiliser. They couldnt help me with any of it!
        Sorry, Rant over!!!!!

Would anyone be able to give me a part number so i can assist the assistant

hehe, avoid the chimps, they only know how to take your money, the bit is usually hanging up with all the other stereo facia adapters.

              Fitting Hole on Surf

OK, here is my question to all those currently ripping stereos out and placing a new one in a surf.

How deep is the recess where the stereo goes? Could I place a stereo in there that was 10" - 11" deep? I know its a wierd question, but If it is, I'll be doing some custom stuff to mine when I get it, along with some photos...

              Cheers peeps

I wouldnt bother with Halfords especially if they're being lame. You can find these bits on the net pretty easy. Just go to some car audio sites.

                  Sterio

I have just replaced the sterio unit in mine ...I got halfords to fit it with the Din pocket but it looked a right mess. I had seen a thread on here where someone had used a Toyota Celica adapter with a blank instead of a tray (if anyone knows where this thread is please let me know I lost it ) Anyway I have just recieved the adapter and tried fitting it yesterday....I got most of it right and it just needs a little triming to fit perfect I am gonna try that today...I will let u know how I get on and post a pic if u like. I got the Toyota Celica parts from Halfords £25-95 and can let you know the part No if you want .......Hal

you use the existing brackets that hold the double unit in place. Take off lower dash and fit stereo and universal pocket, both fit neatly to the existing brackets, bolt into place and refit lower dash.
No need to cut dash about to fit the radio through this way and looks neat an tidy.
Most ICE shops will sell the pockets as do halfrauds.

                      sterio

As promised picture of CD unit installed with a Toyota Celica adapter...I prefer the blank plate to the pocket

                            Blanking plate

                            Mate,
Bought a "Universal DIN size Pocket" Part No: FP-006-H Item code: 779538 today for my 1992 2.4td Surf don't know if it fits yet as I bought the wrong Audio connectors to change my radio. I opened it up and there are a number of universal bits inside with an instruction kit saying it was suitable for a 4Runner.

Hope this may help if you havent already sorted it.
