  • Yukon 5.29 ratio gears.... part 1

    Right,

Recieved my package from Marlin Crawler...

Yukon gears, sposed to be pretty damn tough.

Ive spent £122 at Roughtrax on new pinion bearings (x2) diff flange, axle-diff gasket, crush sleeve, pinion nut an somet else that i can remember...

So im at approx £322 so far.

Shims have been posted to be by Gamedawn (thanks a bundle mate!!)

So should have most things ready to regear.

Ive pretty much got all the info on pinion preload, CBPL, backlash an torque settings for the Ring an pinion..

An best of all, GEARLINK are about 20 minutes from me who do diffs an gearbox's an stuff... So if its a total no go, I can get the local specialist to just do it!

If I was you, I would physically disconnect the plug that engages 4WD, otherwise things could get interesting. Or just remove the front prop shaft - only 8 bolts holding it on.

Best of luck with the project and have fun setting the backlash!

Pah! I'll see your tiny sticker and raise you a 30cm high one

Good to see you're doing the sensible thing with the diff though Rod! When you find your Dodge, i'll buy your axles

Fingers crossed, I'll start on a saturday (provided my uncle is around to help, The Diff is not something i want to do solo!!)
so i'll have saturday an sunday to complete hoping next weekend might be a start.

An Ive got the correct tool for setting the backlash. Just hope i dont need shims on the ring gear itself to adjust to too much.
Yukon gears seem to have a tiny little shim on them already vs. stock from what ive read so it will be interesting getting it right!

One thing i was going to do was ask you for a sticker but that one was already in the box.
I think regearing is probably the only sensible thing ive done to my truck

Im really hoping for a noticable improvment. Just to justify the expense.

Cool - the post office gets it right for once By the way - you don't need shims to adjust the ring gear - you just need to make sure you get it seated nice and squarely on the carrier. Heating it in a pan of boiling water before you fit it helps. Just make sure it's not the spaghetti pan

I was suprised how quick they turned up especially considering you posted them yesterday!

              Well chuffed!

I didnt think there was a shim on the ring gear, the EPC confirms it but the Yukon instuctions say to adjust backlash, shim the ring gear!?!

The Yukon warrenty is absolutly fantastic!!!

If the vehicle is used for towing or off road or modified in anyway this invalidates the warrenty, if the vehicle has tyres over our reccommendations the warrenty is invalid (its something stupid... Dana44 axles i believe are used very often for biiig tyres... they say anything more then 34" an no warrenty!)

Its almost pointless having a warrenty really!
Going to get some gear marker paint stuff tomorrow. then i can go an see my uncle with all the bits an see if were going ahead with it or if i need to get someone else to do it

Wouldn't the fact that the Surf doesn't come with Yukon gears count as a mod, so effectively there is never any valid warranty? Niiice...

                  All parts have arrived.

Total is £327 for whats on that box.

                  Ring gear
                  Pinion
Diff-axle gasket (thats the mangled bit of paper ...)
                  Diff Flange
                  Pinion nut
                  Pinion shims
                  Collapsable spacer
                  two pinion bearings.

all parts are for the REAR diff. Once its complete an monster mania an reading festival are out of the way i'll be looking into the front IFS diff.
I'll probably order a 5.29 R&P for the 7.5" diff an then just a Yukon master install kit for all the bearings an fittings etc.

So far, all parts are from Roughtrax an Marlin crawler with the exception of the pinion shims which were from Gamedawn.

Will do mate, Should be seeing my uncle tomorrow afternoon/evening so will be able to get a definitive answer off him as to if were going to try it ourselves.

Its not overly complex once you've studied whats what an how it all works. The main differential will be untouched.

Its just getting the shims just right on the pinion so the teeth make an acceptable pattern. There are 6 patterns which are fine vs. 12 which aint...

So just a case of trial an error. once its right then torque everything up an hope for the damn best
