            In 1990, Toyota debuted the three overlapping Ellipses logo on American vehicles. and for the name

            If you search for "name" in the USA's Toyota FAQ site, http://toyota.custhelp.com/ , there is this entry:
            <quote>
            Origin Of Toyota Name
            Question: What is the origin of the Toyota name?
            Answer: Toyota Motor Corporation was founded by the Toyoda family. The word “Toyoda” uses ten Japanese strokes to write while “Toyota” uses only eight. Eight is considered a lucky number in Japanese culture. For these reasons "Toyota" was chosen as the company's name.

                Yup, that's cack. C'mon. Anybody who believes that will stand the egg under the cap. It's probably a polite way of saying that the word Toyota itself was a bit too hard for the Americans to understand, hence the easily memorable logo.

                Name wise, far eastern companies do frequently change their names due to various reasons for the western markets. Goldstar is one prime example.

                      just to set the record straight re the soarer ,the soarer emblem is not and never has been a griffin, the toyota badge for the soarer is a winged lion , the wings represent speed and the lion represents strength/power mine however is badged as a lexus as sold in the states .could be classed as snobby but frankly my dears i don't give a damn!!
