  • Suck Squeeze bang blow question!

    Hello,

Just need to confirm the following (been thinking too much lol)

In any given revolution of an internal combustion engine, regardless of the number of pistons, half of them will be sucking or squeezing, and half of them will be banging or blowing.

    Agreed?????????

If so, a 2 litre engine running at a constant 1,000 rpm will 'breathe' 1,000litres of air.

I'll explain what's on my mind in a few posts - gotta get my brain in gear first!!!!!

A pneumatic drill would be better than a engine

well if the engine is a 2 litre and is spinning at 1000rpm then it is doing
          16.6 revolutions per second ,so 16 times a second each cylinder on the "suck" cycle is taking in .25 of a litre.so multiply .25 *16 = 4 litres a second*60 seconds=240 litres a minute*2 =approx 500 litres a minute which sounds more like it
if this has anything to do with sex,you may need to get out for some fresh air !!

          Non intercooled nothing.

in 1 complete revolution, surely each cylinder does a complete cycle too, so at 1000 rpm each cylinder does 1000 bangs or blows, and 1000 sucks or squeezes if that's what you wanna call them.

1 rpm is the crank going through 360 degrees which im thinking is only half way to the pistons ending up where they started (you need two rpm to get back to tdc)

no scrub that its the fuel pump needing to run at half engine speed.
but 1000rpm is the whole engine turning the crank through 360 degrees
but once a second two pistons will be suck/squeeze and two will be bang blow

Errrr, my brain is hurting but you may headed for an IOTW lol

An engine must do two complete revs for one cyclinder to do one complete cycle.

                I think!

                (I hope)

If it is a bog standard 4 cylinder engine, each piston will equal 0.5 litres.

Which would come back to my 1000 litres of air.

yep your right just multiply everything by 2 and you get the answer (i think)

                        No way, Jose!

I am not fishing for IOTW candidates, I need to know the answer to my original post.

So are we agreed that to work out how much air an engine is breathing you

Take half its capacity X the average number of revs

                            (In any given minute)

                              yes....but only instantaneously

you would need to use a bit of simple calculus to get the changes with respect to each other

but as a rule of thumb yep seems fair.
