i hate to say this but the surfs are not the best off road vehicles,
they are great for the green lanes and minor off roading,
they are comforatable and 100% never to be beaton on reliability they are bulletproof,
but unless you part with some serious money to get diff locks they just dont really go places,
however the short wheelbase SHOGUNS are fantastic machines,
diff lock as standard and with the short body can easily manouver around the woods without to much hassle and if you get the v6 24 valve petrol you also get 180bhp and 10 miles to the gallon,
the ultimate off roader i think has to be the landcruiser,
followed by the mercedes G wagon yes not the best looking truck but designed for nato with a great off road history,
dare i say it and the defender 90,
the problem with the landrovers is basicly simple,
built by numptys when they say rust free what they meant was simple when it rusts after its 3 years old dont complain because the rust is free,
they fall apart and are NOT reliable,
however all the parts are so cheap to buy new,
so not all bad,
i think that the manual discos are good off road vehicles they have centre diff lock and constant 4 wheel drive and are dirt cheap to buy,
but they DO NOT look as nice and posh as a surf,
there is just something about driveing around in a surf that looks great and is a piece of quality engineered 100% reliable motor,
they are just bulletproof,
quality motors,
Personally, I'd just challenge him to an offroad test, take him to the muddiest, crappy bog like place you can find, let him go first and prove his abilities and then drive off chuckling when he gets stuck.
Granted, you'll not be proving the Surf is better, but it'll teach him not to be a competitive, high horsed git.
An inexperienced driver could get the most capable 4x4 stuck, just as a talented, observant driver could get a lesser 4x4 through where supposedly better ones get stuck.
I think unless you're looking at competition, or seriously nasty terrain, then drivers are the great leveller, and most 4x4 vehicles will get you to most places.
