  • Newbie with something to Prove

Hi everyone - Total Newbie here

    Just bought my 1st Surf - 2nd Gen 3.0 SSRX - part ex'd a 02' Ford Mondildo --- for it

And it seems I now have something to prove!

My mate (soon ex lol) has a Range Rover, and his first words to me where "Why did you buy that heavy lump of a car? They are Crap, and useless off road! and really ugly".

Now the Ugly bit I can tolerate, I mean, everybody has thier right to what is ugly and what is not. After all he drives a Range Rover, and what beautiful things they are (NOT), and you should see his wife

But, after reading some of this forum and seeing some pictures I am sure that they are comapriable to the Range Rover or Discovery off road.

So what do you reckon my chances are of leaving this Range Rover in the Dog Dudes with my Surf?

hi and welcome to the home of insane surfers.Let your mate wallow in his p155 taking just like he will when he takes the mechanical junk yard off road and gets stuck.Come to the rtts in september and you'll see how capable these trucks are off road as the course i got booked up is brilliant

Given a level playing field, you'll probably both get stuck in the same places. However, his will break more, and will rust away before yours.

Hi and welcome to the nuthouse

Make yourself at home and feel free to join in the banter - beware the yeti, no one has managed to house train him !!!!!!!

There's at least 1 Wales run a year, I'm sure you and your mate with the barge will be welcome, after all you and the guys can get some towing practice (him out of the nearest puddle)

hi and welcome to the surf emporium of pleasure.let me start by saying that there is absolutly nothing wrong with a range rover.theres nothing right with them either,i agree with apache here, they are both very capable off roaders,in standard form and even better modified,a lot of it comes down to driver skill when off road, ask anyone here i get stuck most of the time but then i do ,do a lot of silly things, that way i know what the vehicle is or isnt capable of.happy surfing.let the grin begin.

You may need to make some small modifications for the 2nd one, but the first one will be suitable for unmodified vehicles.

I had a knob in a Rangeover try it on the other day . I over took a slow car and he was behind me, as soon as I had passed the slow car he thought he would then pass me . WRONG , I gave it full right boot and he never got past me , he just fell further behind .
I think he got a shock that a 11 year old Toy beat his 03 plate RR.

I don't underate the range rovers or disco's - I actually have disco - an old k'reg 200tdi thing, and to be honest has never let me down off road, certainly far better than my abilities off road - but what a smeg of a truck. It has totally rusted through on most of the chassis mounts, not to mention the nemourous other rust "everywhere"!

I just thought that my "mate" was very rude and abnotious, ill informed, and I want to prove him down right wrong. I don't want to out perform him (although would be nice to have to tow him out hehe), I just want to prove that a nice looking truck can perform well off road (aswell as on).

p.s count me in with some runs, and the rtts

you haven't told us what rangie he's running. If it's a classic, it's a more capable vehicle than the surf, but it's likely to have had half the chassis replaced, gone through 3 new tailgates, and it leaves the boot floor on the drive after every spell of rain.

P38 in standard guise is comparable to a standard surf, but still likely to have had a lot more bits replaced, air suspension has probably long since stopped working and been removed if he offroads it.

If it's one of these new fangled point and go things, press the right buttons at the right time and it'll go anywhere machines, 7 armchairs on wheels, and as many buttons as the eurofighter... well, your mate must just be inadequate

Engines - other than the rather unusual oil level indicator (when it stops dripping, it's time to top up) most of the LR diesel engines are actually pretty good.

The 3.5 v8 is a masterpiece, the 3.9 is the same engine with an extra 400cc from somewhere, but in finding that 400cc they lost some of the robustness of the engine. Just don't show them water.

Then they continued to eek an extra few hundred cc out of the engines and they started to go downhill, and used more and more electronics to get the best compromise between performance and engine life, don't know too much about these engines, but there's got to be a reason the 3.5 and 3.9 engines are so saught after over the 4.2 and 4.6.

                              Welcome to the forum

I have a stock 3 ltr 3gen and II have failed to get it stuck (yet)

I have used a friends disco a few times and I think there is no comparison. The disco is uncomfortable, sluggish and wallery ( rolls about) when compared with the surf.

I also found the disco to be quite gutless when towing, although to be fare i was towing a 31 foot static caravan across a muddy/ish field !

So basically enjoy your surf and as you will have already found out it is great fun to drive on and off road
If it can be broken it can be fixed
