Don't be too sure. I've got a 3 gen first Reg in Japan May 1998. It was imported in March 08, Reg April 08. ROAD TAX £220 for 6 Months. DVLA say that as it was under 10 years old it needed an Model SVA Report which gave the immisions!!!
When did you go to tax it? If it was even a day before the reg date in Japan, it's still over 10 years old - but £220 for 6 months, and the cost of fuel, and no viable alternative - everyone will have two or three cars too - the everyday electric or super mini things, their family car and the Surf.....
Until they work out how to assess our CO2 emissions we're safe(ish).
Once they get a way of banding us that won't cost them too much (after all that's the only reason they did the less than 2500litres excemption), we are just would be better off just giving them our wage packets directly.
won't the DVLA be able to get your CO2 emmisions from your MOT test? It would give a fairer (in the loosest possible terms of the word fair) grading as to how much tax you are liable for. Example: If you look after your vehilce and keep it exceptionally maintained then your CO2 emmissions would be lower than someone who has the same vehicle, but never looks after it and belches out more CO2 as a result.

Ahh but the cost of setting that up would be high, cause they would need to work out every individual vehicles banding. When they find a cheap way of doing it, that will cost us lots then they're hit it no end.
Synical me
Thanks for your support , It Seems that as Tavvi said earlier ,DVLA have changed the RULEs. Every time i ring them i get a different answer. My last "debate" with them went along the line of "If as you say i have to pay £400 a year because my Surf was reg in 2008, then it should have a 08 reg no!, The reply was NO because it was prev reg in 1998!!I then asked if it was Reg in1998 then the emissions did'nt matter because prior to 2001 it was a plg group and would cost £185! Reply NO because it was reg in 2008.F*****g Hell Its like trying to get an answer out the kids. I'm going to take a day off work and try getting an answer at the nearest DVLA office, at least i can see who i'm talkin too. It would be interesting to know how many surfs have been caught up in this mess, and how many have managed to get the Taxation class amended.

I just posted the details on my other thread,
Been on Gov web site and you can put your details in and it tells you the cost of your TAX.
OK, they probably change it the day before its due, but this was the result I had,
The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for R*** TNR are:
Date of Liability 01 09 2008
Date of First Registration 01 08 2005
Year of Manufacture 1997
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3000CC
CO2 Emissions 0g/Km
Fuel Type Heavy Oil
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval M1
The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry.
Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £101.75
12 Months Rate £185.00
The simple answer is, don't try to understand them, they are the Gov, if you doubt them they come around to your house and make trouble.
I wonder if they have those memory things like they had on Men in Black?
Anyway, mine is a coffee with milk and one please.

Probably why there's a lot of Surfs on Ebay!
I had the same problem with the knobhead MOT kid. He looked at my log book and saw 2003,(Imported date) looked at my reg. number and saw J reg and ask if it was a private plate!!!!!!!!
Erm, in order to be politically correct here I will say:-
You are not wrong there, kick the ********************* out of the country! (and I am refering to polititions and doo gooders here!)
Allow us to smak the kids when they deserve it and bring back hanging!
Do you know, when I was akidiwasscaredoutofmymindbymyd adandifhe.....
Just to update you all on my continuing Road tax saga. To-day i went to the DVLA office in Bristol to try and get it sorted. I explained that my Surf had been reg in the uk on 08/04/08 having been previously reg in Japan in May 1998.I gave them all the paperwork i had Reg Cert, Doc of de-reg from Japan etc.I the explained that as the car had been reg before 2001 i felt it should be taxed as PLG at £185 per year not as a Diesel car at £400. The young lady was very helpful ,but said that she had to check with the manager. The Manager said that each office is slightly Different!!! and as the paperwork had been done in Portsmouth she had to check with them, and would get back to me next week.
Within the hour the young lady rang back and said that another manager had told them the rules have changed, because the sva cert used by the importer gave the emissions the car was placed in group G for tax.
My Reply was whatever the sva cert said the car is prior 2001, a fact you confirm due to the "R" plate. The woman agreed ,but said all i can do is complain to DVLA in Swansea and see what they do. You bet i will. Watch this space.Sorry for rantin on but well f****d off.
To end these annoying 'Road Tax' threads that pop up every now and then.
The law as it stands today 11 July 2007, states that the new tax bands only affect vehicles first registered after 2001. If anyone with a 1st, 2nd or turd gen Surf is paying more than £185 per year for road tax, it's a mistake. Challenge it.

Now, can we drop this and move on...
You took the words right out of my mouth.....er, keyboard.
If you need to ask, you shouldn't have bought a Surf!!!

I want to hear whatever update gpz1100 has to give us thanks very much - if you're not interested then nobody is forcing you to read it. However, let me know if you have some priviledged position on the forum that allows you to dictate subject matter and I'll know to withhold my renewal subs.
