  • Car tax, again.

I've just heard (don't know how true it is) that an attempt was made to block the bill being passed to raise road tax on vehicles registered after 2001.
Anyway, this failed so the bill is to be passed.

If true, how does it affect vehicles like surfs with no emission data? will this be compiled at MOT time?

The answer is in your question.

There's my concern though, my car is a '95 but it was registered in 2004 with an age related plate.

This would mean it would be included wouldn't it?

      Cheers

I thought it was the date of first registration. Mine was registered in 1994 in Japan, but here in 2004. Ergo I would not expect to be affected.

You underestimate the devious cunning and downright thievery of the Tax Department. I would assume they will say date of 1st UK registration until stated otherwise!

You and me and ALL the other secondhand 4x4 owners are low hanging fruit. SOS.

Until they work out how to assess our CO2 emissions we're safe(ish).
Once they get a way of banding us that won't cost them too much (after all that's the only reason they did the less than 2500litres excemption), we are just would be better off just giving them our wage packets directly.

Just renewed my tax for 101.75 for 6 months, PReg 1996, imported and first registered at the end of last year in the UK.

So I think that I am safe with assuming that mine comes in the "First registered before March 2001" bracket.

Don't be too sure. I've got a 3 gen first Reg in Japan May 1998. It was imported in March 08, Reg April 08. ROAD TAX £220 for 6 Months. DVLA say that as it was under 10 years old it needed an Model SVA Report which gave the immisions!!!

GPZ - you've been fitted up like the proverbial kipper here, mate.

It is DATE OF FIRST REGISTRATION, not first registration in UK. Get back on to the thieving b@stards and demand a refund.

Yours is a 1998, and if older than 10 years does NOT require SVA. Again, this is from the date of first registration.

There would have been a field on the registration form where you would state that it had previously been registered elsewhere. If not, then your V5 will state, "Declared new at first registration". Which it ain't

Same here. It's a 1991 truck, first registered in the UK in 2003.

The rules were changed recently - can't say when cos the DVLA don't seem to know themselves but I think it was in the last year / year and a half - which could explain why a vehicle falling into this category might have been treated differently a couple of years ago. Rule is now as stated earlier in the thread - if vehicle is less than 10 years old on import then it goes through the SVA test and emissions reading is taken from model docs.

I took advice from them before importing - using their published help line number - and even when I handed in the registration docs at the local office when registering for the first time I was asked for £180 for the year, which I paid. Next day the person who was processing the case phoned me and said 'pay up the rest or we don't register the car'. I called Swansea again and the helpline still thought it should be £180 but they checked with their 'policy' team (whatever that is) and they confirmed that it should £300 pa (now £400). Only those trained to deal with imports actually knew the real rules at that time but they may have trained up all their staff by now - the Edinburgh office certainly know - when I went to pick up the docs quite a few of the staff came over expressing their surprise, so they had clearly all been discusssing it.

You could try to phone up and say they've mucked up your renewal docs - the person dealing with your enquiry won't be an import specialist and so might not know the rules. From other threads I think one or two might actually have managed to get a reduction for this (wrong) reason, i.e. they genuinely thought they were due the lower rate but they were wrong - but the DVLA person on the other end of the line hadn't been told the new rules and agreed with them.

I've just coughed up £400. A lot of cash I know and I could waste some time attempting to appeal because they misinformed me in the first place - but it's a vast bureaucratic lump that doesn't care and isn't going to change it's mind - and the surf is after all (lets face it) a huge gas guzzler!
