    hi guys,

am looking at getting a company to make a set of feet that will enable there racks to be fitted to my surf, having mentioned to the company that there were others on here and in the wider world that may want a system too, they seemed rather interested. Thought there may be a bulk deal to be done, so if i can guage numbers, please post and let me know, will post pics of racks if anybody's interested.

    what company, and what racks?

most of us either just use thule or paddy hopkirk bars, which are fairly readily available, with whatever attachments we wanna fit on them (cycle carriers, luggage baskets etc) or some are retro fitting the front to back rails from other vehicles, then fitting racks to them.

I've just got one that I'll get delivered to me this weekend, that has a bar along the front of it, that attaches to the tops of the door, like the Thule bars will, feet on the back corners, and clamps as well as a bracket that goes over the bolt that holds the rear wiper on - no holes needed to fit, and looks quite substantial....

the company is called aiko design, there up north somewhere, as i said these are commercial racks, they make bars and racks for transit connects, peugeots, vaux combos etc.

They make a rack that fits a toyota hiace and they have told me that they can't see why the feet can't be adapted to fit a surf. The main reason i am looking at these is its a proper rack that can be used commercially by me everyday.

Now the crunch they are currently selling these racks for the same price halfords want to charge me for the thule set of bars and feet. Suppose it depends on what you want to use the rack for but mine will be abused, aiko also offer accessories that makes the rack a true multi purpose use.

I just wondered if anybody else was currently looking for one.

I'd be interested to see the design, yes. The feet will have to be near the edge of the roof cos there's no strength away from there.

Post some pics when you get them. I need to mount this rack.

Not quite what i was thinking of, apart from galvanizing it i could knock that up in about 2 hours with about £20 worth of materials. But the main puzzle i have is fixing it to the surf, Bolt, weld, ??. Or a great big magnet

Yes but possibly too much standoff height from the roof for me.

I don't use cross bars; the racks have them built in, you don't need more. That's what I did here, bolted straight onto the rails which is only 50mm above the roof.

The Volvo 9 series roof rails fitted to my Surf are 1.8m long, my rack spans them and can be held on by exhaust U bolts and garden hose is a big flexible mount between rack and rail. I only use 4 but could fit more.
