Intercooler..

OK, this is probably a really stupid question, but here goes...

What exactly is an Intercooler and how do you know if the car has it?

Have you got a big 'air vent' in the bonnet? And if you open the bonnet, is there something on the top of the engine that looks like a little radiator???

If the answer to these questions is no -then you don't have an intercooler.....which essentially cools exhaust gas between the engine and the turbo...

do you have a scoop on the bonnet of your truck? it lets a greater volume of air in to the turbo, thus givin more BHP

Only 3rd generation Surfs had a factory intercooler but its a simple mod on a 2.4. Apache is in the middle of doing one for this 3.0ltr an a member called Blizzard has done one on a 3.0ltr.

So, do all 3rd gen's have it or only some?

The third gens with an air scoop on the bonnet have them as standard. Others have been retrofitted, but those are the only factory ones.

In short, the colder air is the denser it is. The denser it is, the more of it you can fit into a space. You need fuel and air (and an ignition source) to make the explosions in your engine that make it go along. An intercooler makes the air colder and denser so more of it can fit in the same size engine and make a bigger bang - hence more power.

Dumb questions are our speciality. Closely followed by dumb answers.

It doesn't have a great deal of effect. There is one school of thought that says that as you need less throttle to get the same speed it is more fuel efficient. There is another (my) school of though that says that because you can go faster you keep pressing the accelerator for fun and use more fuel.
