  • Help?

Hi. I live in Canada and I'm trying to get my hands on a Surf that has already landed here in North America. There aren't too many of these around in my neck of the woods and, since I'm in unfamiliar territory, I have to ask the obvious question...

What's the story with the cracking 2.4L head? Is it as likely to occur as has been suggested? I haven't come across a single 3.0L Surf ... which I've heard carry a superior motor (1KZ-TE, if I'm correct). I'm wondering if it's a gamble to be considering picking up a 2.4L. Also, taking into consideration the import laws here in Canada, was the 3.0L motor available stock in Surfs before 1993? Legislation here requires an imported vehicle to be 15 years old or older.

The vehicle I'm specifically interested in at the moment is a Black 1992 SSR-X wide at 102,000km. Automatic with the 2L-TE. It's been imported from Japan and through the DOT inspection.

Any shove in the right direction is greatly appreciated. I'm very anxious to get my hands on one of these beauties.

    Cheers,
    Matt from Vancouver

Although i am a 3 Ltr owner, it would appear that the 2.4 engines did not have large enough channels for the water to flow sufficiently around the cylinder head. Only buy it, if the head has been updated, if not you may have trouble. The head can be uprated as an aftermarket job.

As someone who can't change a light bulb, hope this helps.

      First, hello.

Some of the 2.4's did have a weakly designed head. Personally, I don't think the 2.4's are quite as bad as people make out provided you service your coolant system properly and keep it well maintained. All the ones that I can remember hearing of cracking have usually been preceded by a lack of maintenance, or were actually cracked when bought. I can't remember many going due to pure and simple bad luck.

There are quite a few who have got surfs in your neck of the woods, so they'll be able to give you better help on specifics and such regarding parts and suppliers around your way.
