  • Gipsy - oil question

Just a quickie for you chaps who are familiar with old/new oil types. Spec for the engine specifies a SAE 20 oil for the Gipsy. Would using a 15w-40 semi be okay, or is it better to use a SAE 30 oil? (I don't believe a SAE 20 is still available)?

    Cheers.

I would use something like 20W50 as it's an old engine. There are oils available from motorists shops specifically for older engines.

I had a quick peek around the Motosave site last night. Gets a bit confusing where the old engine bit is concerned, regarding diesels. All I could see were petrol engine, non-detergent oils.

Btw, is sticking with pure mineral oil the best option?

Yeah, it's most likely had mineral oil in it for all of it's life, semi-synthetic would be a waste and the engine will sound clattery.

        Castrol Magnatec would be ideal.

i'd of thought 15/40 would be better than 20/50.

Cheers Vince. So if I work on the assumption of bog standard 20w-50 mineral minimum, but getting one of the better, (like the Magnatec), oils preferably, that should be an okay rule in general for it?

like vince says matt,if its had a specific type of mineral stuff all its life, changing it would not only make things sound clattery but (from bitter experience) could result in some sort of engine damage,i had the front main pick up on an old ford, trying to be cheap with a multigrade oil
                Non intercooled nothing.

Right. Totally confused now. What do you mean by multi-grade exactly? What, exactly, should I use?

Btw, I've no idea what the previous owner used, oil wise.

Git. Getting me worried for nowt.

Just had a peek. No 20/50, just 15/40. Would that be okay?

Had a look at those initially. The spec seems to suggest they're not best suited for diesel, as they all seem to be between SA to SE spec or not specified.

SE Obsolete For model year 1979 and older engines. CD-II Obsolete Introduced in 1987 for two-stroke motorcycle engines.
SD Obsolete For model year 1971 and older engines. CD Obsolete Introduced in 1955 for certain naturally aspirated and turbo engines.
SC Obsolete For model year 1967 and older engines. CC Obsolete Introduced in 1961 for all diesels.
SB Obsolete For older engines. Use this only when specifically recommended by the manufacturer. CB Obsolete Introduced in 1949 for moderate-duty engines.
SA Obsolete For much older engines with no performance requirement. Use this only when specifically recommended by the manufacturer. CA Obsolete Introduced in 1940 for light-duty engines.

Not yet. Only just finished cross referencing the filter. Finally found out which one it uses.
