Why the square holes

Only noticed at the weekend when i stripped the rear tale gate down that there are two square holes under the number plate, they are factory punched holes, so im not sure if my whole number plate has been raised for some reason as there is also a mark under the number plate where something used to be, any clues??



You can see the mark on the paintwork, just inline with the screw holes, the square holes i have bunged up with some trim fittings to try and keep the water out.

Are they still available or has it been taken off for a reason.?

Think you'll find they originally had some yellow Toyota square plastic plus/grommets in to take the number plate fixing screws. There's something similar used to hold the boot space blind brackets in place if you've got one on the car.

I originally thought they were for fixing the number plate to but have never seen them with 4 holes in them, also the top holes are tapped M6 holes and Toyota don’t tend to use two different type of fixing for the same thing, the fixing plug is not a problem as the ones I’ve fitted are the same, just in black.
