It is speed related, and obviously if you're hammering along then you do need your wheel pushed down again quickly. If you're moving at walking pace to 10mph, then movement with little resistance would seem to matter more.

Like I said though, at low speed, I'm sure shock stiffness will be lost in the noise compared to tyre type and pressure.

I just know I always preferred the OEM shocks on the soft setting, on and offroad, and the ES3000 shocks I have on the back seem to work OK. I still think the LC springs are too stiff offroad on an unloaded truck, but with 3 up and a load of camping gear last weekend I have no complaints about the rear setup at all.

I have just today fitted ES9000's all round and LC springs, i tweaked the torsion bars to level her out and removed the rear arb, I've yet to fully test it but it seems really good.

        Ah yes, torsion bars.

You've just reminded me, I need to un-wind mine a bit 'cos the V8 is almost 100kg lighter than the 2.4 lump and the front of the truck is solid now!

With front shocks I got 2 grey metal round bars about 3" long with flattened ends. What are they for?

Mark, serious comment. I cant understand how firm = good offroad capability. It just makes for a more jarring ride over rocks (you missed out on Bryncrug - that demonstrates it perfectly). Surely plusher, easier travel makes for better offroad performance at the speeds you go laning at as everything moves easier.

A good analogy would be to drive over rocky, rutted ground on big tyres at 10psi, and then again at 40psi. Which is gonna be less painful / damaging?

OK, ES9000s might give better handling on road, but I find myself less and less bothered about on road performance cos I drive like an old fart anyway.

Having said all that, I'm sure the difference between ES3000 and ES9000 is so small as to be lost beside tyre choice / pressure anyway!

If you can supply me with bits that suit my driving style, so much the better!
good comment. thats why toyota supplied us with the hard soft shock settings i guess.but i agree with the tyre choice and pressure as well.im gonna see if i can get inner tubes fitted to my wheels so i can air right down to 10 psi and not have to worry about the bead breaking.this will in effect make it better off road over rocky uneven ground.but also the 9000s do tend to push the axle down more.over 3000s

Conventional beadlockers aren't road legal in the UK are they?

Tubes are a good plan. I reckon I'll get my ATs tubed when I get them as those will have to take me through the pyrenees. From the DVD, it looks rocky, so it might be nice to be able to air down a bit at times.

I run es9000s with LC Springs works great off road, the stiffness of the spring matters more for jarring surley. The stiffer shock just controls the rebound more does it not?

It'll control compression and rebound at rates depending on the valving.

I agree though that the spring stiffness is probably more important.

He can agree, and I'll disagree. Softer is better offroad if you want to keep your vertebrae intact

wel.....i dont know what the 3000's are like as i have never driven on them.mine does not roll loads to the point of being dangerous on road, and i can plant either one of the wheels about a metre off the ground and all the other three stay on the ground.its all relative ,with regards to tyres, pressures, amount of lift, bravery off road.....
