i reckon the advice for flushing right the way through(including the back heater and front heater matrix)is the first action.when was the stat last changed, does the viscous fan cut in when needed.if it was head/gasket related shouldnt the heating run cold and the guage go to a long way up till you get heat.

how hot does it get according to the guage ?

      and a final thought.
when i refilled mine with coolant,i made sure that the front n/s wheel was up in the air,so that the t/stat housing was the highest bit of the engine
      Non intercooled nothing.

John! sorry to go over old ground but have you tried topping it up, leaveing the cap off and running it up to temp, watching to filler neck for bubbles or coolant overflowing? i'd have thought if the head or block had cracked and was pressureing the coolant then this would be evident with the cap off,
from the sound of it you dont have a prob with a blockage in the heaters hoses, if their comeing out hot,
as for flushing it's a pain but best done when it's stripped and you can get at all the hoses and block, i ran hot and then cold water through every soddin hose and oriface i could find and then jet washer'd through the block, very little gunge came out the engine but loads of red cr@p shot out the heaters,
for filling i'd reccomend the soldered drain cock thingy fitted in the heater flow and return at the top of the bulkhead (highest point), fill as normal, fit the cap and connect two pop bottles and hoses to the drain cocks, half fill both and run it up to temp, you'll see the coolant falling in the flow and bubbles/riseing in the return bottle, when it settles out(no movement, or no more bubbles) turn em off and remove the bottles etc.

hope ya get it sorted and it aint the head/block mate,

I thought the cap was 0.9, could this add to your woes ?

          Here's Roughtrax's rad cap

If you want to go for the highest part of the system, disconnect one of the hoses to the front matrix and finish off topping up from there.

It is, (or should be). Equivalent to approx 13/14 P.S.I, if marked as such.

But Matt, JB says his has a 0.6, could it be an issue with JB's problems ?

If the pressure of his cap is indeed lower, then yes, the coolants boiling point will be lower, and it would go to overflow sooner. I would surmise that he has just mistaken what it is from memory, however. His will most likely be the correct pressure when he actually does check it.

Well the systems been flushed done everything but alas all to no avail I have thrown the towel into the ring. Utterly gutted but have decided to go for an Xtrail I put a deposit on one over the weekend so my Surfing day's have nearly come to an end.

With what I will safe on fuel it will let me pay for the "new" one over 3 years.

If I ever become wealthy I will definatley be back on the scene and hope to come along to a few meets in the future just for the craic'.

If the garage don't take it in I will scrap it.

                        Shit happens

Cheers for the tips folks I just can't afford to spend anymore £1250 for new head, £286 for EGR valve, £1500 ish for a complete rebore new pistons crank shaft etc less that 6 k miles ago. Then with buying it 3 years ago It must be one of the most expensive mistakes I have made for a while. Oh yes new exhaust recently, new tyres, new fuel injectors, diesel pump tested at lucas uk. I could have bought a 4 year old Xtrail for what it's cost. But hey I wouldn't have met everyone on here and made so many friends to boot.

Cheers JB I will keep popping in.

I feel a bit sad about that.

If the garage don't want it, at least put it up as a breaker/project here. I'm not convinced your block is cracked you know. Just for me, change the rad cap again. There's nothing to say the cap you've got is (a) the right one and (b) not knackered too. Order if from Roughtrax, just to satisfy your(my)self.

One last thing, have you still got Stevo's sticker on the side of the head that tells you how hot you've got it?

Gutted for you mate however, that list is scary so understand your decision.
No two are the same eh, I've had mine 3yrs, it's had 4 cv boots and oil changes.

The rest lift, tyres ect were all through choice.

It looks like it's gone to 100 deg I have removed the rad cover and ran it up but gas bubbles are frothing like I have added washing up liquid.

I left it fron 5pm and went to it the following morning when I removed the rad cap the thing was still under presure from the previous afternoon.

Cheers I fitted the old rad cap back on I will phone rough tracks tommorrow but I doubt it will make any odds If the head gaskets gone then I think the expense is prohibitive.

If the head or the gasket had gone, it wouldn't hold pressure. An air lock in a sealed system wouldn't hold pressure either, once it cooled any pressure would return to ambient. Same with the small ammount of liquid expansion.

I'm struggling to think how it could pressurise and hold its pressure overnight.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's
